COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course serves as an introduction to the discipline of management. It is designed to
integrate the accepted theories in the area with real world applications to provide
students with the basic knowledge and skills needed for managing others. This course
begins with a discussion of the current issues in management, a brief history of
management, the managerial environment, integrative management issues and then
proceeds to cover the traditional functions of management: planning, organizing,
leading, and controlling. Lecture and class assignments given in the course are
intended to help students understand the needs of modern public and private
organizations, including emerging national and international trends.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, students should be able to identify the principals of managing
formal organizations, recognize the various challenges faced by today’s managers and
give examples of organizations engaging in the management functions of planning,
organizing, leading and controlling.

COURSE AND UNIVERSITY POLICIES:
Attendance
Students enrolled in each course are expected to make 65% attendance of lectures in
other to be eligible for examination.
Evaluation
Continuous Assessment: 30-40marks
The progress of students enrolled in each course will be continuously assessed through
written assignments, field work reports, and/or other means consistent with the
objectives and conduct of the course as determined by the department.
Examination: 60-70marks
This course will be examined at the end of the semester. The duration of the
examination shall be no less than 2hours and no more than 3hours.
Final Marks
The total marks for this course shall not exceed 100 points, continuous assessment
shall be 30% or 40% and examination shall be 70% or 60% respectively.
