1.0Brief introduction:-

The letters LVDT are an acronym for Liner Variable DifferentialTransformer, a common type of electromechanical
transducer that can convert the rectilinear motion of an object to which it is compounded mechanically into a
corresponding electrical signal.

LVDT linear position sensors are readily available that can measure movements as small as a few million of an inch up to
several inches, but our also capable of measuring positions up to

+/- 0.5 m.

Theory :

Principle of LVDT:-

The principal is based upon modulation of the excitation signal. In LVDT Motion of magnetic core changes the mutual
inductanceof two secondary coils relative to primary coil. LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) it’s a
popular transducer which is based on a variable inductance principle for displacement measurements
It provides and egg voltage output proportional to the displacement of a core passing through its windings.
The main benefit of this transducer, when compared with other LVDT types, is toughness. As there is no material
contact acrossthe sensing component.

Linear Variable Differential Transformer Construction :-

In this three coils are arranged as shown schematically in figure between which a magnetic core moves freely.
The construction of LVDT as shown in figure. The centre coil (primary) is energized from an external a.c. supply and the
two end coils are (secondary) connected together in opposite pages are used as pick up coils . The core passing through
the primary and secondary coils provides who magnetic coupling.
Working of LVDT :-

The working of the LVDT circuit diagram can be divided into three cases basedon the position of the iron core in the
insulated former.

In Case-1: When the core of the LVDT is at the null location, then both the minor windings flux will equal, so the induced
e.m.f is similar in the windings. So for no dislocation, the output value (out) is zero because both the e1 & e2 are
equivalent. Thus, it illustrates that no dislocation took place.

In Case-2: When the core of the LVDT is shifted up to the null point. In this case, the flux involving minor winding S1 is
additional as contrasted to flux connecting with the S 2 winding. Due to this reason, e1 will be added as that of e2. Due
to this out (output voltage) is positive.

In Case-3: When the core of the LVDT is shifted down to the null point, In thiscase, the amount of e2 will be added as that
of e1. Due to this out output voltage will be negative plus it illustrates the o/p to down on the location point.

LVDT specifications:-

LVDT specifications are given in following terms,

• Input or excitation voltage – 3 to 15 V.

• Stroke or core displacement – 0.1 mm to 100 mm.

• Input frequency – 20 to 50 KHz.

• Sensitivity – 0.5 to 30 mV/V input / 0.05 mm

• Power consumption - <1 Watt

• Output impedance - < 50.

• Resolution – 2 × 10^-3 mm.

Advantages of LVDT:-

• It serves as a primary detector transducer it Converse mechanical displacement into a proportional electrical
voltage without the assistance of any elastic member.
• It cannot be overloaded since the core is completely separable fromthe device.
• It is insensitive to temperature changes.

• It gives high output without any intermediate amplification.

• It is an economical device.
Limitations of LVDT:-

• When used with a strain gauge, the core is of appreciable mass, compared to the bonded strain gauge.
• It is designed for specific input frequency.

• The device becomes complicated if the direction from null is alsorequired.

Applications of LVDT:-

• It is used as transduction element.

• It is used in the CNC machine for displacement measurement.

• In creep testing machines it is used for deflection measurement.

• It is used for different measurements like pressure, force, thicknessetc. also in the control system.
• This transducer can also work as a secondary transducer.

• In ATMs for Dollar bill thickness

• Used for soil moisture testing

• In machines for making PILLS

• Robotic cleaner

• It is used in medical devices for brain probing

Conclusion :-

LVDTs are a powerful and versatile type of sensor that can be used to measure linear displacement or position with high
accuracy and resolution. Their durability and reliability make them well-suited for use in a wide range of industrial and research
applications.
