Determiners are the words which come before the noun
They can be classified into four types
1. Articles ( a, an , the )
2. Demonstratives ( this ,that, these ,those - help in pinpointing or
want focus or attention )
3. Possessives -( Your , their , my , our - tell the ownership)
4. Quantifiers ( tell the quantity of noun)
Quantifiers usually are divided into two categories
The ones used for
1 Countable nouns ( have plurals) 2 Uncountable nouns (no plural)

a. Some - is used with positive statements, usually for uncountable


nouns but can be used with the countable nouns if a specific
number is not given.
Example ---- Some students keep their camera off during the
class.

b. Any - is used in negative statements and in questions

c.Much - is used for uncountable nouns


when they are in large number.`

MANY IS USED WITH THE COUNTABLE NOUNS


d. Many - is used for countable nouns when they are in
large number
Many ---------------a few ----------------------------few

Much .many are generally used in negatives statements


Ex- there isn’t much milk in the bottle. ( negative )
There is a lot of milk in the bottle. ( positive)

This ring doesn’t cost much. (negative)


This necklace costs a lot. (positive)
Some is used for positive statements or when the answer
is expected in Yes

Would u like to have some coffee?


Do u have some money in your wallet?
There are some notebooks lying on the table.

Any is used in negative statements or to ask questions

Have u any toys for my son ?


Is there any chance of rain today?
There isn’t any meeting today , so u may leave.
There aren’t any cookies or cakes left for you.
We aren’t planning any picnic this year.

Important - 1-Some can be written in place of a lot of /lots of


I have a lot of friends in Germany.
I have some friends in Germany.
2- words like so, too, as much are followed by much/many and not a few
or a lot of
3.- lots of / a lot of are used in positive statements
There are lots of books on my study table.
I owe him lots of money.

Certain words which are always taken as uncountable or as collective


figure ( always take words like much , some , a little , any, no etc)
News , advice , evidence , progress , success , failure , money , t

raffic , accomodation , luggage , furniture , work , information

A little is used with UNCOUNTABLE Nouns
