Be a Doer,
Not a Dreamer
Shonda Lynn Rhimes is a famous American television producer
and writer. Rhimes delivered the following speech at the graduation
ceremony for Dartmouth College in 2014.

President Hanlon, staff, honored guests, parents, students,

Shonda Rhimes families, and friends, good morning and congratulations to the 05

graduating class!
When people give graduation speeches, they usually tell you:
Follow your dreams. Dream! Dream and dream big! Don’t stop
dreaming until your dreams come true. I think that’s nonsense.

22 LESSON 1
Extending Your Thoughts

C Read the following graduation quotes and think about what they mean. Then talk with
your partner about what you like the most and why.

“My favorite animal is the turtle. The reason is that in order

for the turtle to move, it has to stick its neck out. There are
going to be times in your life when you’re going to have to stick
your neck out. There will be challenges and instead of hiding in
a shell, you have to go out and meet them.”
– Ruth Westheimer at Trinity College University, 2004

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s

life. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own
inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow
your heart.”
– Steve Jobs at Stanford University, 2005

“Work hard but work smart. Always. Every day. Nothing is

handed to you and nothing is easy. You’re not owed anything.
No job or task is too small or beneath you. If you want to get
ahead, volunteer to do the things no one else wants to do, and
do it better. Be open and learn.”
– Bobbi Brown at Fashion Institute of Technology, 2014

D What is your motto in life? Write and present it to the class.

Life is like riding a bicycle. On Your Own

To keep your balance, you must keep moving.
