RADIANT COMPUTER EDUCATION- NO.2 INSTITUTE FOR BCA/MCA COACHING GUIDED MEDIA 1. Twisted Pair It is the most widely used media for local data transmission. Itis used for telephone communication. It has a pair of wires, twisted together to transmit data. The twists provide protection against crosstalk & noise. When electrical current flows through a wire, it creates a small circular magnetic field around the wire. When two wires are placed together, their magnetic fields are opposite of each other. Thus two magnetic fields cancel out each other. This is called cancellation effect. Twisting of wires enhance the cancellation effect. Twisted Pair cable is of 2 types a, UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) It is the most common kind of copper wiring. It is composed of pairs of wires & each wire is covered by an insulating material. They only rely on cancellation effect & further the number of twists varies to reduce noise & crosstalk b. STP Shielded Twisted P: It has a shielding around the cable to protect from external interference. Itis @ special kind of telephone wiring used in some business installations. It combines the techniques of shielding, cancellation & wire twisting. It reduces noise but the diameter & maximum cable length of STP is 100 meters. 2. Coaxial Cable This cable is spreading rapidly as a means of distributing cable TV signals. It is widely used in cable TV, LANs, long distance telephone transmission etc, It can transmit both analog & digital signals. Its frequency characteristics are superior than twisted pair. Because of its shielding, itis less susceptible to noise. It consists of hollow a outer cylindrical conductor that surrounds a single inner wire. This outer conductor is covered with a jacket. The inner conductor is held in place by regularly spaced insulating rings. 3. Fibre Optic Cable Itis widely used as a backbone for network due to its higher data transmission rate, light weight, less repeaters required, long distance coverage, and low interferences ete. Its made up of glass & plastic ike material which carties data in the form of light. It has 3 components: a) The Transmitter-It generates the light pulses based on the input electrical signal b) The Detector- it regenerates the electrical signal based on the light signal it detects on the transmission medium. ©) Alight source- itis attached to one end of optic fibre and detector at other end. ‘An optical fibre has a cylindrical shape & consists of 3 concentric sections: the core, the cladding & the Jacket. The core is the innermost section & consists of one or more thin strands of glass. Each strand is surrounded by a glass coating having optical properties. The outer layer is a Jacket of plastic to protect against moisture & other environment dangers.
