Meetings Conducted by the Council of
Architecture this Month

Film on Architecture AwareDear friends,
‘The documentary style arose in the late 19th century and has continued to be a
popular choice for filmmakers. The formal definition of a documentary film is ‘a
nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily
for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record.’ This definition
implies that a documentary should contain facts about its subject matter, but it
does not set a standard for presenting those facts. The best documentaries don't
just present information—they engage their audiences by eliciting emotion and
drawing them into the story. The best architects do the same thing with their
buildings, inviting people to experience them as more than just structures but as,
pieces of artwork that exist in a larger context.
Architectural documentaries are fascinating because they offer an insight into a
creative process that's usually hidden from view. These films take viewers behind
the scenes and reveal how architects think, talk, and react to unique challenges on
projects that can take years to complete.
This year, the Council has come out with short films, to spread awareness about
architecture. The first three films made by Ar Shaleen Sharma of six, one and a half
and 21 minutes duration touch upon ‘Art, Architecture and Technology,’ and the
"Role of Architects in the Society.’ This is one of the ways society recognises the
intangible contribution an architect makes in improving the quality of life.
In collaboration with ‘The ECO-Logical Foundation’ the Council is also producing a
‘Film on Didi Contractor’. Didi's work in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh is
an expression of sustainable design practices that embodies deep respect towards
nature, honours the traditional wisdom of communities living in the area and at the
same time addresses the contemporary needs of modern lifestyles.
Best wishes,
Ar Habeeb Khan
