Activity Type Introduction


Grammar Game: gap-fill, Here is a third conditional guessing game for students to play in
guessing (pair work) class.

Procedure
Focus
Divide the class into pairs (Student A and B).
Third conditional
Give each student a corresponding worksheet.
Aim
Students sit back to back, so they can't see each other's worksheet.
To guess missing words

Student B has three chances to guess the missing words.

It's then Student A's turn to guess the missing words in the second
sentence, and so on.

This continues until all the sentences have been guessed.

The student with the most points at the end of the game wins.

THIRD CONDITIONAL

Student A

You and Student B have the same sentences, but where you have words in bold, your partner
has gaps and vice-versa. Take turns reading the sentences and guessing the missing words in
the gaps using the third conditional.

You have three chances to guess the exact words. If you guess correctly the first time, you
score three points and write the missing words in the sentence. If your guess is wrong, try
again for two points and then for one point.

1. We wouldn't have missed the flight if the bus had arrived on time.

2. I wouldn't have watched that film if I .......................................... it was going to be so bad.

3. If I'd known it was your birthday, I would have bought you a present.

4. If you hadn't reminded me, I ............................................

5. If you'd watered the plants, they wouldn't have died.

6. I would have bought those jeans if they ............................................

7. If he'd known she was married, he wouldn't have asked her out.

8. If I'd known the traffic was going to be so bad, I ............................................ my car.
