BS 1692 : 1998

Foreword

This British Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee MHE/3. It supersedes
BS 1692 : 1971, which is Withdrawn.
--``,`,`,`,,,,,,,```,,,,,`,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

The principal changes that have been made are as follows:

a) corrections to dimensions;
b) elimination of anomalies in the table;
c) improvements to design parameters;
d) general update to the writing style and format.
As this revision of BS 1692 was prepared there was no comparative standard, in terms
of subject coverage, in the work programme of the relevant European Technical
Committee (CEN/TC 168).
The primary objective of this specification is to provide requirements for safety and
reliability of lifting equipment without placing restrictions on the general design or the
methods employed in construction.
It has been assumed in the drafting of this British Standard that the execution of its
provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced people.
Attention is drawn to the following statutory regulations: The Construction (Lifting
Operations) Regulations 1961, Regulation 36 [i],The Supply of Machinery (Safety)
Regulations 1992, Statutory Instrument 1992, No. 3073 [2] and The Supply of Machinery
(Safety)(Amendnient) Regulations 1994, Statutory Instuuinent 1994, No. 2063 [3].
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity
from legal obligations.

behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the claimant’s
responsibility. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable

Recommendations for the suspension of
gin blocks
B . l Gin blocks should be suspended by fitting onto
devices that:

the hauling part of the rope (see figure B.1).
B.2 Attention is drawn to BS 5973 : 1993 which limits
the maxiniuni load which can be lifted by a scaffold

BSI - British Standards Institution

BSI is the independent national body responsible for preparing British Standards. It
presents the UK view on standards in Europe and at the international level. It is
incorporated by Royal Charter.
Contract requirements
A British Standard does not purport to inclilde all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
Revisions
British Standards are updated by amendment or revision. Users of British Standards
should make sure that they possess the latest amendments or editions.
It is the constant aim of BSI to improve the quality of our products and services. We
would be grateful if anyone finding an inaccuracy or ambiguity while using this
British Standard would inform the Secretary of the responsible technical committee,
the identity of which can be found on the inside front cover. Tel O181 996 9000 Fax:
O181 996 7400.
BSI offers members an individual updating service called PLUS which ensures that
subscribers automatically receive the latest editions of standards.
Buying standards
Orders for all BSI, international and foreign standards publications should be
addressed to Customer Services, Sales Department at Chiswick Tel O181 996 7000;

In response to orders for international standards, it is BSI policy to supply the BSI
implementation of those that have been published as British Standards, unless
otherwise requested.
Information on standards
BSI provides a wide range of information on national, European and international
standards through its Library, the Standardline Database, the BSI Information
Technology Service (BITS) and its Technical Help to Exporters Service. Contact the
Information Department at Chiswick Tel O181 996 7111; Fax: O181 996 7048.
