Supermarkets should limit how much people buy to stop food waste

In our fast-changing world, supermarkets play a key role in providing the convenience of
consuming wide variety of food products. In my opinion, it is important to introduce limits
on shopping in supermarkets in order to fight against food waste and to start living a more
ecological way of life.
Firstly, food waste is an urgent problem that affects not only individuals but also the
environment. When people buy more than they can consume before the use-by date, food
ends up in landfills, contributing to environmental degradation.
Secondly, one of the main culprits of food waste is the tendency and habit of consumers to
buy more than they actually need. The large selection and bargains often lead people to
overbuy but they forget that some items can go bad before they are consumed.
Many people think that food waste has harmful effects on the environment. When organic
waste decomposes in landfills, it produces harmful greenhouse gasses that contribute to
climate change. By limiting the amount people can buy, supermarkets can directly address
the root cause of this global problem.
However, the introduction of purchase limits serves to encourage people to buy only what
they really need. If people bought only what they need, they would contribute to reducing
food waste and we would be one step closer to a better lifestyle.
To sum up, purchase limits can also improve the fairness of the distribution of goods.
When people buy excessive amounts of certain goods, others (e.g. people in Africa) may
have limited access or even lack of goods. Setting limits ensures that everyone has access to
the goods they need and it will help to stop food waste.
In conclusion, as we move towards a greener lifestyle, supermarkets should consider
introducing purchase limits to solve the global problem of food waste.
