1 Product Information
1.1 Design and function

Design
The instruments of the ATG family are designed as 19” plug in units. All operating and
indicating elements as well as connecting sockets for an external ohmmeter are located on
the front panel. On the backplate you can find additional connecting elements. The
instruments are equipped with a controlled high voltage generator and an internal automatic
discharge device. The instrument control contains the necessary safety circuits also for
connection of an external Emergency Off unit (ATG 6000 option). The devices are protected
against thermal overstressing by long time operation.

High voltage generation

Via a phase-angle control the mains voltage is applied to the primary winding of the high
voltage transformer. The secondary side of the high voltage transformer features a high
voltage winding with tappings. Outputs of the high voltage winding are fed directly or
via one-way rectification to a high voltage switch. Depending on its position different max.
voltages and currents are available on the high voltage output which can be limited
additionally.

Function
The ATG 2 Burning Out Device belongs to cable fault detection devices and is used for
transforming high-impedance cable faults into low-impedance cable faults by "burning out" in
a permanent arcing. With cable fault location instruments low-impedance faults
can be detected easier than high-impedance faults. Due to the stepwise variable max. output
voltage there is the possibility to individually adapt the ATG 2 to the existing fault
situation. A current increase is possible by a stepwise decrease of the output voltage during
the burn down operation after "breakdown" of the fault. The ATG 2 is equipped with an
automatic discharge device and the possibility of earthing the test object. Additionally, the
fault resistance can be measured on the ATG 2 with the help of an external ohmmeter.

3 Putting into operation
3.1 Preparing operation

Prepare faulty H.V. cable

• Isolate all connections from the faulty power cable, secure against repeated
switch-on and make sure that zero voltage condition exists.
• Insulate nearby items which are under voltage
It must be assured that nearby items of the station or the cable system under
voltage do not result in breakovers or breakdowns, due to applying voltage of
the Burning Out Device to the power cable.
• Connect all strands of the cable in the cable station, with the exeption of the fault
afflicted strand, to the station earth.

Lead size and insulating capacity of the cable system must be in an

appropriate relationship to the voltage amplitude and to the burn out current.
Otherwise, overloading to the still intact parts of the system might occur. The
Burning Out Devices of the ATG family are
intended for use in the field of power cables. Do not use them for
communication cables or for data transmission cables.

Connect to earth
Connect the Burning Out Device with the protective earth of the cable station via the
protective earth terminal on the backplate. The protective earth conductor should be kept as
short as possible and must have low impedance (min. cross section 10 mm2, copper).

Make high voltage connection

• Connect shield of high voltage connecting lead in the station to station earth. The
shield serves as station earth connection and closes the operating current circuit.
• Connect strand of the high voltage connecting lead with the fault afflicted
conductor of the power cable.

It is very important that all connections are of low resistance as possible. Bad connections
can lead to weldings or contact wear.

• Install external EMERGENCY OFF unit (option) at appropriate location and plug in the
connection plug instead of the jumper plug (18) on backplate of the Burning Out
Device.

14
3.2 Connection of instrument

Connection to an single-phase shielded cable

Connection to a three-phase unshielded cable with neutral

15
3.3 Connection to mains

Mains operation
• Connect instrument to mains supply using appropriate mains voltage and fitting fuse
rating.

The protective conductor of the mains supply must have the same potential
as the station earth!

Operation with emergency power generator

The generator must have adequate power to meet the maximum power generator power
requirements of the instrument (see technical data) without break down of voltage or frequency,
due to its load.
Otherwise, it could happen that the instrument will be switched off automatically.

• Set generator voltage according to mains voltage as indicated on type plate and
connect instrument.

The power supply by the emergency generator may not be electrical

isolated but must be connected to protective earth!

16
3.4 Switching on

• Set range selector switch (11) to desired voltage range (start preferably with DC
voltage)

• Turn potentiometer (6) for voltage limitation fully to the left until locked in place at
zero position.

Before putting into operation, local safety requirements and safety

precautions for the protection against direct or indirect contact of
live parts have to be met accordingly!

• Switch on mains switch (1).

The unit is in operating condition "READY FOR OPERATION"
B green indicator lamp (14) is illuminated
• Press push button "Ready to switch on" (2).
Activation is only accepted by the instrument if
B the EMERGENCY OFF push button switch (12) is not pressed,
B the external EMERGENCY OFF unit (option) is not activated or the jumper
plug on the backplate is inserted.
B the thermal overstressing protection has not tripped. If the device is in full load
operation for long time, it is possible that it is switched off automatically by
the thermal protection. The device can only return to service if temperature has
decreased below the temperature limit.
In attempting to bring the ATG 6000 into the operating condition „READY TO
SWITCH ON" by pushing the pushbutton a buzzing occurs as long as temperature
has not fallen below the temperature limit.

The unit is in operating condition "READY TO SWITCH ON"

B the green indicator lamp (14) is out
B the red indicator lamp (13) is illuminated
B the discharge device has no more effect on the High Voltage output

• Press pushbutton "High Voltage On" I (3).

The High Voltage transformator is only connected to the supply voltage if
Bthe potentiometer (6) for voltage limiting is locked in zero position
The unit is in operating condition "IN OPERATION"
B the pilot lamp "In Operation" of push button "High Voltage On" I (3)
is illuminated

Using range selector switch (11) it is possible to switch voltage ranges even during
operating condition "IN OPERATION".

17
3.5 Operating modes

Burn-out operation
By switching the range selector switch (11) the ATG 2 can be operated with different max.
voltages. Current and voltage can be adjusted separately from each other using the
potentiometer (6) and (8). As a result, a high-impedance cable fault can be ignited by
increasing the voltage step by step using the range selector switch (11) and the potentiometer
(6). The ignition of the cable fault should be preferably carried out with DC voltage. The cable
fault is subsequently "burned out to low-impedance". The burn out current can be increased
by lowering the voltage using the range selector switch (11).

Resistance measurement
With the help of the external ohmmeter the resistance of the cable fault can be measured. In
this way it can be decided if an additional "burning out" of the fault is necessary in order to
ensure an accurate fault location.

The connecting sockets (9) are protected against each other by an

overvoltage arrester (90 V). Please note that no resistance measuring
devices may be connected using a voltage supply of more than 60 V.

• Set range selector switch (11) fully left to position W.

B The unit returns automatically into the operating condition "READY FOR
OPERATION" from the operating conditions "READY TO SWITCH ON" and
"IN OPERATION".

• Connect ohmmeter via connecting sockets (9).

• Press pushbutton (10) for activation of ohm measurement.
B The discharge unit opens and the external ohmmeter measures the fault
resistance. When releasing the pushbutton (10) the discharge unit
works again.

18
3.6 Switching off
• Press pushbutton "High Voltage Off" (4).
The instrument returns into the operating condition "READY FOR OPERATION".
The high voltage transformer is disconnected from the supply voltage.
B the pilot lamp "In Operation" of push button I (3) is out
B the red indicator lamp (13) is out
B the green indicator lamp (14) is illuminated
B the discharge device affects the connected high voltage cables
• Set range selector switch (11) to position 60 V~
• switch out mains (1)
• Discharge live parts, connect to earth and short circuit them.

The ATG 2 Burning Out Device is equipped with an internal discharge

unit and an internal earthing possibility via the 60 V winding of the
burning out transformer. The internal discharge device is designed
for a max. energy of 500 Ws. Before cancelling the safety precautions
it is essential that all live parts are externally discharged, connected
to earth and short circuited, because they could have remained
charges caused by possible interruptions.

3.7 EMERGENCY OFF

• Press EMERGENCY OFF pushbutton switch (11).

• Unit returns to the operating condition "READY FOR OPERATION". The high voltage
transformer will be isolated from he supply voltage
B the pilot lamp "In Operation" in push button "HIGH VOLTAGE ON" I (3) is out
B the red indicator lamp (13) is out
B the green indicator lamp (14) is illuminated
• Set range selector switch to position 60 V
• The instrument can only be set into the operating condition "READY TO SWITCH
ON" by pressing the push button "Ready to switch on" (2) if the EMERGENCY OFF
pushbutton switch (11) has been unlocked with the key.

By pressing the EMERGENCY OFF pushbutton switch and taking out the key,
unauthorized use of the instrument can be prevented.
