MANUAL / PROCEDURE - TEXT ABOUT DESCRIBING PROCESS

Tujuan Pembelajaran:
A. Pengetahuan
1. Diberikan generic structure siswa dapat mengidentifikasi frase penanda utk teks prosedur secara
jelas.
2. Diberikan bacaan tentang teks prosedur berbagai hal, siswa dapat menjawab pertanyaan
tentang bacaan tersebut dengan benar.

B. Ketrampilan
Diberi proyek berupa cara kerjav alat atau proses pembuatan sesuatu benda, siswa mampu
menulis teks prosedur secara mandiri sesuai topik yang diberikan.

Study the following describing process carefully!

1. Words and expressions used to ask and explain how things work

 How do we/you + Verb 1


 Tell me how to + Verb 1
 What must/should we do to + Verb 1
 Explain to me how to + Verb1

2. We used transitional markers to explain the steps/the stages how things work (in series)
 First …

 After that …
 Finally, … / the last, ......

Example:
How should we do to operate the computer?
a. First, plug the power cord, press the power button on, after a few minutes you will see
a Windows Menu on the monitor
b. Second, look at the left bottom of the monitor, then hold the mouse gently, move the
arrow pointer onto the “start” menu and click it
c. Finally, click the program menu, and choose MS-word. Now, you are ready tp type
using the computer.

We can also use “before/after” to explain the steps/the stages how things work with the
following patterns:
Clause + before/ after + you + verb 1
Clause + before/ after + Verb – ing (no subject)

 Plug the power cord before you press (= before pressing) the power button on
 Press the power button on after you plug (=after plugging) the power cord

Or we can change the position of the clause with “before/after” at the beginning of the sentence

 Before you press (= Before pressing) the power button on, plug the power cord
 After you plug (= After plugging) the power cord, press the power button on

Read the following dialogues to describe process.

Situation 1:
Eka : Lisa, do you know how to operate a cassette player?
Lisa : Yes, of course. First, insert the plug.
Then, put the cassette into the cassette compartment.
Finally, press the play button.
Situation 2:
Anisa : How do you cook chicken, Mom?
Mrs. Ridwan : First, cut the chicken into a small pieces.
Then, sprinkle it with salt, pepper and spices.
After that, fry it with vegetables in a little oil for five minutes.
Next, add water and cook it slowly for about forty minutes.

Situation 3
Aldi : Can you tell me how to operate this fire extinguisher?
Mr. Budi : Sure. First, hold the nozzle in one hand. Like this.
Aldi : I see.
Mr. Budi : Second, point the nozzle at the fire.
Aldi : Alright. What is next?
Mr. Budi : Now, remove the pin.
Aldi : That’s it? Wow, that’s easy. Thanks, Sir.
Mr. Budi : Anytime.

IMPERATIVES

It is spoken to give a command, to make a polite request, an to give directions

The negative form of imperatives is formed from:

a. Verbal Example:
- Don’t open your book please!
- Don’t boil this water!
Don’t + V 1 +
- Don’t make mistakes!
Object !
- Don’t close your eyes!
- Don’t touch me!

b. Nominal
Example:
Don’t + Be + Complement + ! - Don’t be sad, please!
- Don’t be lazy!
- Don’t be angry, please!
- Don’t be crazy, please!
- Don’t be jealous, please!

The positive form of imperatives (affirmative statements):

a. Verbal Example:
- Study hard, please!
V1+O+! - Boil three glasses of water!
- Please, Raise your hand before you answer my question!
- Take the first turn on your right!
- Read the text carefully!

Example:
b. Nominal - Be happy, please!
- Be loyal, please!
Be + complement + ! - Be clever, please!
- Be diligent, please!
- Be responsible, please!
