Devon
Devon
Devon is a county in southwest England. It is known to be home to sandy beaches, medieval towns, coastal
landforms, and moorland national parks. Devon is also presented to be a series of picturesque, south-coast
harbour towns including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The Southwest Coast Path follows the coastline,
taking in the towering cliffs of the northern Exmoor Coast and rock formations on the fossil-rich southern
Jurassic Coast. Devon Is represented in the media to be Mother’s nature playground.
Devon is also home to the “bustling” historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter, where locals and visitors can enjoy
live music, an active nightlife and all the culture they could consume. It is also home to excellent restaurants
serving locally sourced food and lots of chances to exercise your credit card in a range of boutique and high
street stores. Devon is probably best known for its coastal resorts, the dramatic cliffs that line the coast in the
east of the county is a great place for rock pooling, sailing, and fishing, while North Devon’s coast is a haven for
surfers and those that love water sports and scenic views. In the south, there is the English Rivera and Torbay,
as well as the stunning beaches that can be found in Salcombe. The county is famed for its award-winning
beaches, many of which are awarded Blue Flag status and regularly top polls as some of the best in Britain.
Devon is also presented to be a great holiday area for all with family-friendly attractions including historic and
heritage sites like museums and steam train rides, as well as theme parks and much more, it is a great place for
kids and adults and with the abundance of cosy cottages, it’s perfect for a romantic getaway, dog-friendly
breaks and solo adventures too.
I feel connected to a place through my experiences within a place and my interactions within a place. For
example, as I have been lucky enough to visit Devon numerous times, I feel a sense of attachment and loyalty
to the area as my sense of the place has developed. On the other hand, if I were to visit a place that I had
never been to, I would not have a strong sense of the place and feel no connection towards it. Having spent
time researching Devon as a place has made me feel more connected to the area as I feel I know much more
about it.
Song Lyrics
GLORIOUS DEVON
recorded by Peter Dawson
with orchestra conducted by George W Byng
1929
As crumpy as a lump of lead This song “Glorious Devon” further illustrates how
Be a loaf without good leaven,
But the yeast mother England do use for her bread well represented Devon is in the media. It calls
Be Devon, be Devon, glorious Devon!
upon Devon’s history and how it is holy like
referring to Adam and Eve. The use of repetition of
(Transcribed by Peter Akers - August 2017) the word “glorious” presents Devon really to be so
and has an impact on the listener/reader to agree
with them. It is also described to the “flower of the
west” Illustrating how it the centre piece and most
beautiful place in the west of England.
Personal Experiences
Exter Chiefs at Sandy Park. However, this is all well on a day where the
weather is on your side. Devon in the miserable
weather is very different. From personal
experiences there are much more limited activities
to do in the area during days when the weather is
rubbish but a personal favourite of mine was going
to watch the Exeter Chiefs play Leister Tigers at
the Sandy Park stadium in Exeter.
