• Dirty L.O is caused by - Water ingression
• - Fuel dilution
• - Combustion products
• - Oxidation products -
• - Foreign materials
• - Microbial Degradation .
• To remove contaminants and oil deteriorating products from L.O and to
extend its life , continuous purification method is used during the engine is
under operation. But for the dirty L.O , batch purification method is
recommended while vessel stay in port. For the successful purification of
dirty L.O , the following process should be done .
• - Transfer the whole quantity of dirty L.O from sump tank to a storage/renovating tank .
• - In this tank , L.O to be heated up to 60 ‘C by provided heating arrangement and allow to settle at least 24
hour. While settling , water and sludge from L.O to be drained out frequently.
• - At this time , open up M.E crankcase , both wet and dry sump tanks , properly ventilated , thoroughly wipe
out and cleaned , make inspection and closed back . All L.O piping to be drained out.
• - If condition of L.O in renovating tank is found satisfactorily free from water and sludge in drainage , start to
purify with L.O separator , renovating tank to renovating tank circulation process.
• - To achieve optimum purification effects
• - Use correct size of gravity disc
• - Minimum feed rate
• - Heated up inlet oil to 77 ~ 82 ‘C by purifier heater
• - Water washing by using warm water.
• - Frequently de-sludge the purifier
• - During the process , possible sources for dirtiness of L.O to be rectified , to make sure no further problems.
• - L.O acidity , viscosity and water content test to be done frequently and keep batch purification process until
test results are satisfactory.
• - Then release L.O from renovating tank to sump tank via purifier outlet for normal engine operation.
• - Even though the test results are found satisfactory , Oil sample to be sent for laboratory analysis for further
recommendations.

• There are two methods used onboard to treat the sewage,

• chemical or biological methods.

• The chemical method is basically a storage tank which collects solid material for

disposal in permitted areas or to a shore collection facility.

• The biological method treats the sewage so that it is acceptable for discharge

inshore.

• The most preferred sewage treatment in ship is biological sewage treatment i.e.,

using aerobic bacteria. So we will discuss only biological treatment plants here.

arc welding electrodeဘယ့်န ျ ြီးရလဲ
• The welding electrodes are classified on the basis of the electrode
metal, flux coating, current used, position of welding, performance
characteristics, chemistry and the mechanical properties of the weld
metal etc.
• There are various standards of nomenclature and classification of
welding electrodes such as American Welding Society (AWS), Bureau
of Indian Standards (BIS), British Standards Institution (BSI),
Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) and ISO 2560 etc.
AWS Classification
AWS stands for American Welding Society and this classification is
widely used in the merchant marine.
• E XXXX: The first character “E” in E6013 stands for flux covered
electrode as used in Metal Manual Arc Welding.
• E60XX: The next two characters indicate the minimum tensile
strength. The “60” in E6013 indicates that the weld metal will have a
minimum tensile strength of 62000 psi. Please refer to the chart
below for the other key numbers and the associated tensile strength.

EXX1X: The fourth character indicates the different positions in which welding can be done using this
electrode. In this case “1” in E6013 means that the welding can be done in flat, overhead, horizontal and
vertical (upwards). Please refer the table below for other key numbers and the associated welding positions.
EXXX3: This fifth character indicates the type of flux coating used, penetration of the electrode and the type of
current suitable for the electrode. In this case the “3” in E6013 tells that it has a rutile potassium based flux
coating. The penetration of the electrode is light and it can be used with AC and DC currents. Please refer the
table below for other key numbers and their properties.
EXXXX-X This extra character is sometimes used for additional requirements. For example in the electrode
E7018-A1, the suffix “A1” in the last refers to added chemical composition of 0.5 % Mo. Please refer the table
below for other suffixes. These suffixes generally differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and even though
the electrodes may be belonging to the same standard they may still be slightly different as each manufacturer
likes to add a personal touch.

WATER LEVEL GAUGES
Every boiler is to be fitted with at least two independent means
of indicating the water level. One of which is to be a direct
reading gauge glass. The other means is to be either an
additional glass or an approved equivalent device

It is possible for the small water or steam passages
to block with scale or dirt and the gauge will give
an incorrect reading. To check that passages are Steam Cock (A)

clear a 'blowing through' procedure should be


followed.
Referring to Figure, close the water cock B and
open drain cock C. The boiler pressure should
produce a strong jet of steam from the drain. Cock Water Cock (B)
A is now closed and Cock B opened. A jet of water
should now pass through the drain. The absence of Drain Cock (C)

a flow through the drain will indicate that the


passage to the open cock is blocked.
Then close drain cock C and open water cock B,
water level rise up. Finally open steam cock A

Water Gauges
Boiler gauge glass blow down
1. Close the water cock and open drain cock.
2. The boiler pressure should produce a strong jet of
steam from the drain.
3. Steam cock is now closed and water cock opened.
4. A jet of water should now pass through the drain.
5. The absence of a flow through the drain will indicate
that the passage to the open cock is blocked.
6. Then close drain cock and open water cock, water level
rise up.
7. Finally open steam cock.

from drums and headers, either when
filling the boiler, or raising steam.

GE overhaul, liner ာ ဘာတိုငြီး့် လဲဖ ြီး။
A cylinder liner is calibrated by measuring the internal
diameter using a micrometer gauge. It is routinely carried out
during a unit overhaul when the running gear has been
removed. So that the measurements can be directly compared
to previous readings and a wear rate calculated, the position
of the measurements is standardised by using a gauging point
template, which in practice is a piece of flat bar hung over the
side of the liner. The bar has holes drilled in it at the
appropriate gauging points. The diameter is measured both in
the fore and aft and athwartships direction.
Liner Calibration
Liner calibration is taken at every unit overhaul to know the
wear down of liner. For slow speed engine, maximum wear
down is 0.8 to 1 % of original bore diameter.
First clean liner thoroughly. Liner calibration is taken by using
inside micrometer with extension bar which has been calibrated
against a master gauge.
The measurements can be directly compared to previous
readings and a wear rate calculated, the position of the
measurements is standardised by using a gauging point
template, which in practice is a piece of flat bar hung over the
side of the liner. The bar has holes drilled in it at the

• A turning propeller is electrically insulated from the hull by the lubricating oil

film in the bearings.

• Electrical potential is generated between the shaft and the hull. As a result the

cathodic protection of the ship will not protect the propeller.

• Electrical potential can cause currents in the bearings resulting in pitting of the

bearing surfaces.

• Problems can be avoided if the shaft is earthed with a propeller shaft slip ring.

This shaft earthing assembly comprises a pair of high silver content/graphite

compound brushes mounted in a balanced brush holder, running on a copper

slip ring with solid silver track.

Gravity disc
Disc in the bowl hood for positioning the
interface between the disc stack and the outer
edge of the top disc. This disc is only used in
purifier mode.
Interface: Boundary layer between the heavy
phase (water) and the light phase (oil) in a
separator bowl.
In the purification mode, the position of the
interface (X) can be adjusted by replacing the
gravity disc (K) for one of a larger or smaller
size.
A gravity disc of a larger size will move the
interface towards the bowl periphery, whereas a
disc of a smaller size will place it closer to the
bowl centre.
The correct gravity disc is selected from a
nomogram,

• An insulation tester is a high reading resistance meter using a high test voltage usually 500 V
DC.
• The test voltage is produced either by an internal hand-driven generator or by a battery and
electronic voltage charger.
• A test voltage of 500V DC is suitable for testing ships’ equipment rated at 440 V AC.
• Test voltages of 1000 V and 5000 V are used for high voltage (HV) systems onboard ship.
• Before applying the test, the equipment to be tested must be disconnected from the live
power supply and locked-off according to standard safety procedures.
• Check the circuit for live or dead with circuit tester or multi-meter. If the circuit is dead, it is
safe to carry out an insulation test.
• To check the function of insulation tester, short the two probes together, switch to "MΩ" and
press the test button or rocker switch. The pointer should indicate approximately "0 “Ω.
• Confirm that a reliable earth connection is obtained by connecting the probes to two separate
earth points on the equipment frame.
• For 3-phase machine, measure and log the phase-to-phase insulation resistance values.Three
readings as U-V, V-W, and W-U.
• Measure and log the phase-to earth insulation resistance values. Three readings as U-E, V-E
and W-E.
• Note: insulation resistance decreases with increase of temperature.

• A preferential trip is a kind of electrical arrangement on the ship which is
designed to disconnect the non-essential circuit i.e. non-essential load from
the main bus bar in case of partial failure or overload of the main supply.
• The non-essential circuits or loads on ships are air conditioning, exhaust and
ventilation fans, and galley equipment which can be disconnected
momentarily and can be connected again after fault finding.
• The main advantage of the preferential trip is that it helps in preventing the
operation of main circuit breaker trip and loss of power on essential services
and thus prevents blackout and overloading of the generator.
• The preferential trip operates at 5, 10 and 15 seconds and the load is
removed accordingly. If the overload still persists, then an audible and visual
alarm is sounded.

First start arrangement
• What is first start arrangement on ships ?
1.Firstly start the emergency air compressor to fill up the air to the emergency air
bottle up to desired pressure obtained.
2.Drain out oil and water.
3.Open emergency air bottle outlet valve and pressed up desired pressure.
4.Then start the generator with correct procedure.
5.Close the breaker and switch on the lighting.
6.Start the required machinery ( especially G/E FO booster pump, SW cooling
pump, E/ R blower).
7.Start the main air compressor and press up to main air bottle.
8.After that, M/E warming by using generator jacket water and start the L.O pump.
SOLAS Regulation II-1/26.4, Dead Ship Condition
Interpretation
1 Dead ship condition for the purpose of regulation II-1/26.4 Dead Ship Condition should be understood
to mean a condition under which the main propulsion plant, boilers and auxiliaries are not in operation and in
restoring the propulsion, no stored energy for starting and operating the propulsion plant, the main source of
electrical power and other essential auxiliaries is assumed to be available.
2 Where the emergency source of power is an emergency generator which complies with regulation II-
1/44,(Starting arrangements for emergency generating sets) IACS SC185 and IACS SC124, this
generator may be used for restoring operation of the main propulsion plant, boilers and auxiliaries where any
power supplies necessary for engine operation are also protected to a similar level as the starting
arrangements.
3 Where there is no emergency generator installed or an emergency generator does not comply
with regulation II-1/44, the arrangements for bringing main and auxiliary machinery into operation should be
such that the initial charge of starting air or initial electrical power and any power supplies for engine
operation can be developed on board ship without external aid. If for this purpose an emergency air
compressor or an electric generator is required, these units should be powered by a hand-starting oil engine
or a hand-operated compressor. The arrangements for bringing main and auxiliary machinery into operation
should have capacity such that the starting energy and any power supplies for engine operation are available
within 30 min of a dead ship condition.

•A circuit is said to be OPEN when a break exists in a complete conducting pathway. Although an open occurs when a
switch is used to de energize a circuit, an open may also develop accidentally.

•Overloaded Electrical Fault


•An overloaded circuit is the primary reason for a breaker tripping and occurs when a circuit is has more connected
electrical load than it is supposed to have.
•Earth Fault
•A Ground Fault condition exists when the Earth wire touches the ground wire
(bare copper) or the side of a metal outlet box (because the metal box is connected
to the ground wire. The ground fault is a type of short circuit. This ensures that all
exposed conductive surfaces are at the same electrical potential as the surface of
the Earth, to avoid the risk of electrical shock if a person touches a device in which
an insulation fault has occurred. It ensures that in the case of an insulation fault a
very high current flows, which will trigger an over current protection device (fuse,
circuit breaker) that disconnects the power supply.

Paperwork such as risk assessment, Permit to work and previous maintenance record are to be prepared and carried out.

a. Check whether all tools and spares are available or not.

b. If so, then start the Stand by generator.

c. Check all parameters are normal.

d. Now share the load with the help of synchroscope.

e. Again check all the parameters are within normal range.

f. Put full load on the Stand by generator.

g. Stop the generator on which work has to be carried out.

h. Put MEN AT WORK tag.

i. Shut the air starting valve, fuel oil inlet & outlet valves and isolate the system.

j. Let lube oil priming pump run for half hour after then stop it.

k. Drain the jacket water.


l. Remove the cylinder head cover.
m. Remove high pressure pipe.
n. Take out the injector using its tool.
o. Open the rocker arm bolts & remove it from its place.
p. Remove the Jacket water outlet pipe.
q. Disconnect the scavenge & exhaust manifold from the cylinder head.
r. Open the cylinder head bolts using the Torque spanner or hydraulic jack(As provided on your vessel).
s. Check the lifting gear (Crane & chain block, Eye bolt, etc.)
t. Lift the cylinder head & put it at a suitable place.
u. Open the crankcase door.
v. Bring the piston to TDC position & attach eye-bolt on it and Attach hook of chain block to it.(Before bringing
Piston to TDC, the top part of liner needs to be cleaned)
w. Bring the piston to BDC and open the bottom-end bolts & remove bottom end bearing.
x. As load of piston is now on Lifting gear, so take it out & put it on the piston stand.
y. Remove the piston rings using ring extractor.
z. Remove the circlip from the gudgeon pin & take out the gudgeon pin, so connecting rod can be taken out.
Fuel valve OH
• > Stop the Engine on which work has to be carried out.
• > Put MEN AT WORK tag at necessary positions
• > Shut the air starting valve, fuel oil inlet & outlet valves and isolate the
system.
• > Let the lube oil priming pump run for half an hour after then stop it.( For
main engine Exclude this step)
• > Now, remove the high pressure pipe.
• > Take out the fuel injector using its tool. Cover the hole with a cloth, so that
nothing goes inside the unit
• > Put it on the testing kit. Check the lifting pressure, atomization, pressure
falling steadily, dripping of oil. If all are satisfactory and manufacturers
overhauling time is not reached then no need to open up and overhaul . If
not follow below steps
Spare fuel valve in the workshop will be overhauled.
> Now, take out the injector from the testing kit, put in a diesel oil & clean it.
> Put the injector on the vice and tighten it.
> Loosen the lock nut of the injector.
> Now loosen the compression nut to release the spring pressure, then take out the spring.
> Open the cap nut and take out the needle and guide.
> Put the parts on the cleaned table.
> Check the condition of spring by dropping on the floor plate, it should jump and also check it by
tightening in the vice and then releasing. The difference in the length, no cracks to be there.
> Check the visual needle, there shouldn’t be any scoring marks because it is made of Nitrite
material.
> Try to insert the needle inside the guide at an angle of 45degree, the needle should be on its own
weight.
> Check the size of injecting holes by using Go or No go gauge.
> If the go gauge is going then hole size is OK.
> If no go gauge goes, then it means the size has increased, then the nozzle needs to be changed.
> Now assemble the injector and do the lifting pressure setting on the test kit by adjusting the
compression nut.
> Check the injector again for its lifting pressure, atomization, steady fall of pressure and dripping.
> If Everything showing fine put back fuel injector in place.
-Fuel valve overhaul and check point
Fuel Valve Test (Reference Yanmar Diesel Engine.)
1. While slowly operating the hand lever of the tester, adjust the screwing-in of the pressure adjusting nut t to attain
the specified injection pressure.
2. Quickly operate the hand lever of the tester (at rate of two to three strokes per second), and check the state of
spray. If the hand lever of the tester is operated slowly at this time, fuel oil runs down after the hand lever is
stoked, and you might err in judgment that the nozzle is defective. Thus pay attention to this regard. Replace such
a clogged nozzle or nozzle which gives a streaky injection with the new one.
3. The nozzle can be used continually if the oil tightness of the seat part maintains a pressure 2.0 MPa (20kgf/cm2)
lower than the specified injection pressure and allows the fuel oil to such an extent of oozing out from the nozzle
tip.
