Objectives: at the end of the reporting, everyone is expected to learn the following:

 Components of ammunition
(Gunpowder)
 Definition of gunpowder
 Three types of gunpowder
 Definition of primer

Components of ammunition (colongan)

Case: holds all of the other components together.

Primer: ignites the propellant.

Propellant or powder: provides the energy to propel the projectile.

Projectile or bullet: the object that is fired from the gun.

Gunpowder is made up of 3 elements: (Agan)

Sulfur

Charcoal

Saltpetre

Definition of gunpowder: (Sedenio)

 an explosive consisting of a powdered mixture of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal. The earliest
known propellant explosive, gunpowder has now largely been superseded by high explosives,
although it is still used for quarry blasting and in fuses and fireworks.

Three types of gunpowder: (Salazar, giner, onggue)

1. Black powder - is a low explosive material comprised of potassium nitrate (saltpeter), sulfur
and charcoal. While used as a propellant in fireworks and pyrotechnics, it is also used in
some ammunition and muzzleloaders

2. Brown powder or prismatic powder - sometimes referred as "cocoa powder" due to its
color, was a propellant used in large artillery and ship's guns from the 1870s to the 1890s.

3. Flash powder - is a pyrotechnic composition, a mixture of oxidizer and metallic fuel, which
burns quickly (deflagrates) and produces a loud noise regardless of confinement.
What is primer? (Bulat ag)

 refers to a small, sensitive explosive component located at the base of a cartridge or shotgun
shell. It is responsible for initiating the ignition of the propellant, which in turn propels the
projectile out of the firearm.
 is an igniter used to initiate the burning of a propellant. Small arms cartridges are classified
as centerfire or rimfire depending on the location of the primer. In centerfire cartridges, the
primer is located in the center of the base of the cartridge case.

How primer works: (lee)

The primer consists of a small metal cup filled with a sensitive explosive compound, typically
lead styphnate or a similar compound. When the firing pin strikes the primer, it crushes the cup,
causing the explosive compound to ignite. This ignition creates a flame or spark that travels
through the flash hole in the cartridge case, igniting the propellant and generating the necessary
pressure to propel the bullet or shot.
