 Please come dressed for lab to observe lower extremities for ALL classes
 Bring or wear shoes that demonstrate a distinctive wear pattern of your feet
 REQUIRED READINGS:
 1) Neumann, DA. Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System. Chapter 15, pps:
627-681, 2010
 2) Rancho Los Amigos. Observational Gait Analysis. Los Amigos research &
Education Institute, 2001
 3) Power Point Presentations
 4) Observe gait videos on U-Tube

 Objectives:
 The students will be able to:
 1. Distinguish the phases of the gait cycle
 2. Interpret the characteristics of the phases of the gait cycle
3. Recognize the kinematics of the phases of the gait cycle for each joint
4. Appraise the normal muscle function (isometric, concentric, eccentric) with
each muscle at each phase of the gait cycle
 5. Differentiate abnormalities from the “normal gait cycle”
 6. Analyze numerous videos of normal and abnormal kinematics during the
gait cycle
 7. Assess different pathological gait patterns by observing videos
8. Determine when a gait deviation is due to abnormal muscle function
 9. Develop an understanding of selected interventions that can be used to
treat selected gait deviations
 10. Perform qualitative gait analysis on > 30 normal subjects
 12. Measure selected gait parameters under various conditions, including
normal walking, fast walking and running
 13. Describe different assistive devices that are used with patients with gait
deviations

MONDAY, January 9, 2023; 1:00 PM-5:00 PM.

 1:00-2:30 pm
 Introduction to gait and gait analysis (Pages: Neumann, 627-639)
 Definitions: gait cycle, stance phase and stages, swing phase and stages,
double leg stance, single leg stance
 Parameters of gait: base width, step length, stride length, pelvic list, pelvic
vertical shift, pelvic rotation, CG, normal cadence, etc.
 Kinematics of gait (Pages: Neumann, 639-646)
 2:45-3:45 pm
 Practice observational gait analysis
 3:45-5:00 pm
 Kinematics of gait LAB - Measure with a goniometer (stop action during an
instant in the gait cycle) and document the ROM of the trunk, hip, knee, ankle,
STJ, 1st MTP joints at each period of the gait cycle in as many planes of motion
as you can accurately measure

WEDNESDAY, January 11, 2023: 1:00 PM-5:00 PM

 1:00-2:30 pm
 Continue overview of gait analysis
 Muscle function during the gait cycle (Pages: Neumann, 650-655)
 2:45-3:45 pm
 Practice observational gait analysis
 3:45-5:00 pm
 Muscle functions gait LAB - (isometric, concentric contractions, eccentric
actions) throughout the gait cycle for the lower extremity
 Analyze (stop action during an instant in the gait cycle) and document the
Muscle functions (isometric, concentric contractions, eccentric actions)
throughout the gait cycle of the trunk, hip, knee, ankle, STJ, 1 st MTP joints at
each period of the gait cycle in as many planes of motion as you can
accurately measure

Thursday, January 12, 2023: 8:00 AM-12:00 PM. Gait analysis laboratory
 8:00-10:00 am
 Videos – Class Review
 Gait Analysis Lab Evaluations
 Identify a particular gait deviation
 Go to You Tube and watch a video of the gait deviation
 Identify as many potential causes of this gait deviation as you can
 List clusters of signs and symptoms and identify the most characteristic
aspects of this gait deviation
 Is an assistive device appropriate? If so, which one? Which gait pattern?
 What are appropriate interventions indicated for this patient (Be precise)?

 Patient education
 PT Modalities
 Electrical stimulators
 Biofeedback
 Mobilizations
 Stretching/flexibility
 Therapeutic Exercises
 Neuromuscular dynamic exercises for neuromotor control
 Balance exercises
 Gait retraining exercises
 Functional exercises
 Wrapping/taping
