CHAPTER ONE
1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter is basically on the background of Chimfunshi
5
1.1BACKGROUND
Chimfunshi was founded in 1983 by David and Sheila Siddle in the North of Zambia, when a
game ranger brought a badly wanted infant Chimpanzee to their cattle farm. After bringing
that Chimpanzee named Pal to life the word of his recovery spread and soon the Siddle’s
were inundated with orphan Chimpanzees.
Actually with over 130 chimpanzees, Chimfunshi is now one of the largest (9,800ha) and
oldest chimpanzee sanctuary of the world.
The majority was confiscated from poachers who attempted to smuggle the infant to be sold
as pets (bush-meat and pet trade) others were rescued from zoos and circuses from all over
the world .now the rescued chimps live safe in the large Muyombo forest that surround their
enclosures within their family group.
The problem is that people around Chimfunshi area are not aware of the importance of
conserving the forest and the benefits that come with it due to this reason the forest is
under extinction because of cutting of trees for human activities leading to deforestation, soil
erosion, animal displacement and land degradation.
for the above reason this report clearly focus on the importance of conserving, ways of
conserving and dangers of not conserving the forest.
