INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS

 Do not open this test paper until instructed to do so.

 Unless otherwise stated in the question, all numerical answers must be given exactly or correct to
3 significant figures.
 The full mark is 50.

ADVICE TO STUDENTS

 Full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working. Answers must be
supported by working and/or explanations.
 Where an answer is incorrect, some marks may be given for a correct method, provided this is
shown by written working. All students should therefore be advised to show their working.
 A maximum of 2 marks will be deducted throughout the whole paper for poor presentation of
answers and for missing units.
 Whenever necessary, the following rates should be used for tax computation:

1. The revenue of a company has dropped by 3. Which of the following represents the
10% from 2021 to 2022, and then increased solutions of the inequality
by 20% from 2022 to 2023. If the revenue in 9  2x 5  x

2023 is $256 608, find the revenue in 2021. 3 4

A. $225 815.04
B. $237 600 A.
C. $277 136.64
D. $291 600

Let P be the revenue in 2021.

P × (1 – 10%) × (1 + 20%) = 256 608 B.
P × 0.9 × 1.2 = 256 608
1.08P = 256 608
P = 237 600
⸫ The revenue in 2021 is $237 600.

4. In January, William works for 240 hours 6. The sum of first three multiples of a positive
and his hourly wage was $125. In February, integer x is greater than 240. Find the
the number of working hours of William minimum possible value of the third
increases by x%, but his hourly wage multiple of x.
decreases by 25%. If his salary is decreased
by $1 875 from January to February, find x. A. 40
B. 41
C. 120
A. 18.75 D. 123
B. 20
C. 25 x + 2x + 3x > 240
D. 41.7 6x > 240
x > 40
William’s salary in February ⸫ The minimum possible x is 41.
= 240 × 150 – 1 875 ⸫ The minimum possible of the third
= $28 125 multiple of x is 123.
30 000 × (1 + x%) × (1 – 25%) = 28 125
22 500 × (1 + x%) = 28 125
1 + x% = 1.25
x = 25

5. Jerry plans to deposit a sum of money in

bank P or bank Q for 3 years. Bank P offers
interest at 16% p.a. compounded yearly,
while bank Q offers simple interest at
16% p.a. Jerry will earn $5 056 more
interest when he deposits his money in bank
P. Find the principal.

A. $2 528
B. $15 800
C. $31 250
D. $62 500

Let P be the principal.

P × (1 + 16%)3 – P = P× 16% × 3 + 5 056
0.560896P = 0.48P +5 056
0.080896P = 5 056
P = 62 500
⸫ The principal is $62 500.

6. Kenneth plans to take out a loan from a bank and he will repay the amount 5 years later. The loan
schemes offered by bank A and bank B are as follows.
Bank A: simple interest rate of 10% p.a.
Bank B: interest rate of 8% p.a. compounded monthly with a service fee of $500 per year
It is known that if Kenneth takes out the loan from bank A, he will need to repay an amount of
$210 000.
(a) Find the loan amount according to Kenneth’s plan. (2 marks)
(b) Kenneth claims that Bank A’s offer is more favourable to him when compared to Bank B’s
offer. Do you agree? Explain your answer. (3 marks)

(a) Let $P be the loan amount according to Kenneth’s plan.

P × 10% × 5 + P = 210 000 1M for P × 10% × 5
1.5P = 210 000

7. (Calculate the following by using the salaries tax rates and basic allowance given on the first page .)
The average monthly income of Kenny is $20 500. He is entitled to the basic allowance only.
(a) Find Kenny’s salaries tax payable. (2 marks)
(b) Kenny is about to change to another job and his salaries tax payable will be increased by 90%.
Find his new average monthly income. (4 marks)
(a) Net chargeable income
= 20 500 × 12 – 132 000
= 246 000 – 132 000
= $ 114 000
= $ (50 000 × 2 + 14 000)
Kenny’s salaries tax payable
= $ [50 000 × (2% + 6%) + 14 000  10%] 1M for breaking down NCI
= $5 400 1A
u-1 for missing unit
(b) Let $y be his net chargeable income.
50 000 × (2% + 6%+ 10%) + (y – 50 000  3) × 14% = 5 400 × (1 + 90%)
1M for breaking down NCI
9 000 + 0.14y – 21 000 = 10 260
y = 159 000
His net chargeable income is $159 000. 1A
Alternative solution to calculate NCI:
His net chargeable income
= 50 000 + 50 000 + 50 000 + (5 400 × (1 + 90%) – 1 000 – 3 000 – 5 000) ÷ 14%
1M for breaking down NCI
= $159 000 1A

Her average monthly income

= $(159 000 + 132 000) ÷ 12 1M for NCI +$132 000
= $24 250 1A

8. A telecom company provides two roaming service plans as follows:

Plan Basic monthly fee Free data* Charge for each extra MB of data usage*

A $100 1 600 MB $0.5

B $180 2 800 MB $0.3

*Note: Data usage less than 1 MB is counted as 1 MB.

Let d MB be the data used by Mr. Lee, where d  2800. At the end of the January, Mr. Lee found
that his monthly charge for using plan A will at least three times that for using plan B.
(a) Find the maximum possible data used by Mr. Lee. (3 marks)
(b) Starting from February, the data used by Mr. Lee is expected to increase by 2.5% a month
and he will choose the plan with the lower monthly charge. Mr. Lee claims that his monthly
charge will not exceed $610 at the end of December. Do you agree? Explain your answer.
(2 marks)

(a) When choosing plan A,

monthly charge = 100 + 0.5 × (d – 1 600)
= $(0.5d – 700)
When choosing plan B,
monthly charge = 180 + 0.3 × (d – 2 800)
= $(0.3d – 660)
0.5d – 700  3(0.3d – 660)
1M for correct plan A and plan B
0.5d – 700  0.9d – 1 980
+ 1M for A  3B
–0.4d  –1 280
d  3 200
∴ The maximum possible data used by Mr. Lee is 3 200 MB. 1A
(b) The maximum data used by Mr. Lee at the end of December
= 3 200 × (1+2.5%)11  4 199 MB
Maximum monthly charge at the end of December
= 180 + 0.3 × (4 199 – 2 800) 1M
= $599.7
< $610
∴ The claim is agreed. 1A f.t.
