The meaning of XICA logo

The hands holding the globe represent the aims of Xavier Institute of Computer
Applications (XICA) paving the way for serving the world through computer
technology. The curved lines from above indicate the flow of the blessings of God in
the world. The intricate lines of the latitude and the longitude represent the Cross as
a symbol of the love of God for the world. Learning computers is represented by the
symbol of computer. The IHS placed on the screen of the computer represents the
Society of Jesus that runs this institution. The effort of the Institution and its
students to initiate the entire world to the technology of computers is symbolized by
the click of a mouse. The signals that are received are depicted through the two lines
crossing each other and forming an “X” that stands for XAVIERS. The circle with
the inscription: Xavier Institute of Computer Applications and its motto: “Towards
New Horizons” is the essence of the emblem.

The origins of the Jesuits as benchmark pioneers in education.

Our Roots and Origins

St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad, was established in 1956. It is one of the many Colleges in
India managed by the “Jesuits”. The Jesuits are identified by the initials “S.J.” (Society of Jesus)
after their names. The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 by a Spanish priest, St. Ignatius of
Loyola (1491-1556). His friend St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552), who was also a Spanish priest,
belonged to the original group of nine who began the Society of Jesus together with St. Ignatius. He
sailed to India as a Delegate of the Pope, landed in Goa in 1542, and started the first Jesuit
educational institution, College of St. Paul, in Goa. Soon the number of Jesuits and their educational
institutions increased. To honour his pioneering spirit in the field of education the Jesuits in India
have taken St. Francis Xavier as their Patron, and have named most of their institutions after him.
XICA or XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS is also named after him.
The Jesuits specialize in academic fields of teaching and research ranging from astronomy
and archeology, art and architecture, cartography, computers, genetics, medicine, history, and
other academic disciplines. They are pioneers in various fields of education creating benchmark
breakthroughs from the conventional nature of most institutions and earned the title
“Schoolmasters of Europe” with reason. The Jesuits continue specializing in opening new frontiers
of education, responding to the signs of the times and catering to students everywhere without
discrimination of class, caste, creed or colour.
SJ runs about 40 colleges in India most of them are rated as the best in the country like:
XLRI, XIMB, Loyola College, Chennai, St Xavier's colleges of Bombay, Calcutta and Ahmedabad,
St Joseph's College – Trichy and so on.
XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 7

XICA is part of the SJ universal scenario

but localized in A'bad, India
Xavier Institute of Computer Applications (XICA) is part of a larger Jesuit educational
network all over the world. XICA shares the same vision of any Jesuit Educational initiative across
the world keeping in mind the Indian context, the growing needs of the corporate and Industrial
market and the need for competent software professional equipped with values of integrity of
character and being men and women for others. Combining all these learning processes is
promoted in XICA through lectures, practical sessions, relevant seminars, workshops, remedial
classes and tutorials.
XICA is one of the several Institutions under the umbrella of St. Xavier's College Society,
Ahmedabad, which was established in February, 1956 and which has been offering courses and
facilities for formal and non-formal education to its students of Ahmedabad city and other parts
of the Gujarat State and India for the last 57 years.
In 2002, St. Xavier's launched a Bachelor of
Computer Applications with 2 objectives in mind. To
provide students with an environment for the all-round
development of their mental, hysical, aesthetic, social,
and spiritual potentials, together with the values of
integrity, hard-work, honesty, fairness, and tolerance,
so that they give of their very best. Excellence in these fields is to be interpreted in terms of putting
the skills developed in each student at the service of the socially discriminated groups in our
country with a view to setting up a society where all have equal opportunity as children of God.
The second objective was to provide a powerful tool for those looking for employment
given the rising demands of the corporate market for software programming.
8 XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Specific details of XICA's main methodology of

achieving the Objective
1. Admission Policy : Xavier Institute of Computer Applications is a minority institution and seeks in the
first place to provide higher education to all children of the Christian Community. However, in the
spirit of universality that has always characterized Christian education, the institute not only receives
but welcomes students of all castes and creeds, especially those socially discriminated against.
2. Universality : Xavier Institute of Computer Applications admits students from the different States of India
as well as from different countries of the world. It also brings home the reality that we are all brothers
and sisters belonging to one large human family. Students from out of town are accommodated in our
two hostels. St. Xavier's Men's Hostel, and St. Xavier's Ladies' Hostel.
3. Orientation Programme : At the beginning of the academic year the first year students have an
orientation programme. The purpose of this programme is to make students aware of the values that Xavier's
stands for, and the goals towards which they must all strive. It is also an occasion for staff and students to get
acquainted with each other. Students are given a background to most of the subjects offered in the institute.
They are also informed about their obligations in XICA.
4. Guidance and Counselling : The staff of XICA are always
ready to offer guidance to students. Through counseling,
students are made aware of their potentialities, and acquire
skills to develop their personality and solve personal
problems. XICA students may access these services through
its Director.
5. General Course Information : XICA prepares students for the 3 year Bachelor of Computer Applications
(BCA) degree affiliated to the Gujarat University and is a self financed course.
6. The medium of instruction and examinations in BCA is English only.
XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 9

Criteria for Selection of candidates.

XICA is governed by the ordinances of the Gujarat University for granting admission to students.
However, it retains its privileges as a Minority Institution.
Eligibility
1. Students who have passed the Gujarat HSC Board Examination are eligible for admission to the
first year of BCA. Students who have passed from other Boards may apply for admission only after
having obtained a Provisional Eligibility Certificate from Gujarat University. Candidates are
admitted on the basis of their marks at the qualifying examination. The procedure to be followed
would be intimated by the University authorities.

2. Students who have attended XICA the previous year are normally assured of re-admission,
provided their conduct and progress have been satisfactory. Those who wish to continue their
studies at XICA must fill out their admission form and pay their fees within a week of the
reopening of institute even if their University results have not been declared. Applications
received after that period will be considered on merit, place permitting, and a 'late fee' will be
charged for those who are re-admitted. Students who are unable to fill their form or pay their fees
personally, may request a responsible person in town to do so for them, and inform the Director
of the arrangement. XICA office does not accept any such undertaking.

3. A candidate should get enrolled/registered for the first semester examination. If enrollment/
registration is not possible owing to shortage of attendance beyond condonation limit /
regulations prescribed OR belated joining OR on medical grounds, the candidates are not
permitted to move to the next semester. Such candidates shall re-do the semester in the
subsequent turn of that semester as a regular student; However, a student of First Semester shall
be admitted in the Second Semester, if he/she has successfully kept the term in first semester.
10 XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

To move to the Third Semester, a student has to clear all Credits of first semester. Likewise, to
move in the Fourth Semester, a student is required to obtain all the credits of second semester.
Similarly, after clearing all the credits of third semester, a student can move to the fifth semester
and he/she shall be allowed to move to the sixth semester after clearing all the credits of fourth
semester.
4. Students from other colleges who wish to join XICA in the second year must check the possibility
and/or rules for admission on the notice board, after their University results are declared.
Admission into higher classes is based on academic merit, and on the availability of places. Those
applicants whose names have been shortlisted will be called for an interview with the Director.
XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 11

Regularity Regarding Attendance ::

Discipline : All Xavier Institutions are noted for their “discipline”. This word does not stand for
'control' or 'suppression' as is commonly understood. Rather, it means following a
set of rules that ensures a “responsible exercise of one's freedom.”

Rules form part and parcel of every institution. Nevertheless, we believe that “rules are for
humans, not humans for rules.” And so exceptions can be envisaged. Obviously, students who take
the law into their own hands have to pay for the consequences! The authorities go out of their way
to contact the students, dialogue with offenders and consider their case sympathetically so as to be
reasonable with the penalties imposed on them, when necessary, for the maintenance of
discipline.
Attendance Requirements ::
The minimum attendance required by the University is 75% of the total number of working days.
But XICA rules are different. Students are expected to attend all lectures and practicals regularly.
Internal marks (5/30) are reserved mainly for attendance. The annual examination forms of those
whose attendance at lectures and/or practicals is less than 75% may not be sent to the University.
The Director reserves the right to refuse re-admission to students who have shown themselves
irregular without adequate cause.
12 XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

The academic year consists of two Semesters, starting in June and October/November. Changes in
the dates, if any, are announced in all the leading newspapers.
The class timings are from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. from Monday to Friday; the class timings on
Saturday are from 08.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. Kindly note that the Management holds the RIGHT
to change the class timings.

Rules and Regulations ::

1. All students must be present for the General Assembly at the start of the academic year.
Students are required to attend classes from the first day of the term. Students who are absent
for the first week of a term shall be considered to have left the Institute, unless they have prior
permission from the Director.
2. Students are expected to attend all the lectures and practicals prescribed in the institute
timetable. Attendance will be marked at each lecture. Students who do not attend lectures on a
particular day may not be allowed into the laboratory for practicals.
3. Students may absent themselves from the institute only for a serious reason after submitting
leave applications in writing to the Director.
4. In case of illness, or some other personal matter, the Director must be duly informed in writing,
not later than ten days from the first day of absence. Medical certificates must be submitted
when possible.
5. Students who are reported to be irregular will be first warned, and if they persist in being
irregular, will have to explain their absence. If the authorities feel that the reasons supplied are
not satisfactory, the student will be asked to leave the institute in the following term.
XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 13

6. As a policy, exemption from lectures/ practicals is given only to those who represent the institute
or University for some event (sports, NCC, NSS, competitions...). Their absence at
lectures/practicals is condoned, but this does not guarantee them 'full marks' for class
participation unless their general response to the subject teacher is satisfactory.

Examinations ::
XICA spaces out its regular examinations through the academic year. There are two sets of exams
(First internal & Second Internal) in every semester. The Second Internal exams will be of 3 hours
which includes the entire syllabus and will have greater percentage of internal marks. Every paper
also has assignments. The End Semester Exams will be conducted by the University. The progress
of students is evaluated by these examinations, which are compulsory for all students. The
students' internal evaluation marks are based on their performance at these tests and
examinations. The tests and examinations
comprise the Internal Evaluation of the
student which accounts for 30% of the marks
required for passing the University
Examination. The Exams for Foundation and
Elective courses are conducted by the
Institute. The exam schedule is placed on the
notice board well in time.
14 XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

:: The Calculation of Internal Marks is as follows ::

Exam Marks Internal Marks
First Assessment 50 Marks 5 Marks
Final Assessment 70 Marks 10 Marks
Assignments & Seminars 10 Marks
Attendance 5 Marks
Total 30 Marks

Other Regulations :
1. There are “study-days” (no lectures/practicals) a few days before the exams. Students who drop
lectures/practicals for exam preparation outside of these days will have to face disciplinary
action.
2. The institute does not hold any re-tests. Students who do not appear for a test/examination will
lose part of their internal marks.
3. Since institute test/exams are treated on par with the University examination system, those
who remain absent for personal reasons (including sickness, travel, family problems, marriage,
etc.) will forfeit their marks.
4. Special consideration will be given for those who cannot appear for a test/examination because
of involvement in some activity concerning the institute/university, (e.g., playing a match,
participating in a competition), provided they have the permission of the Director.
XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 15

5. Any student found using unfair means at an institute test/ examination will receive a 'zero' in the
respective paper and may be asked to leave the institute in the following Semester. The
penalties imposed by the discipline committee will be final and binding on the student.
Students must not carry their personal belongings (books, notes, purse etc.) into the exam hall.
They must check their person, desks, seat surroundings before the exam to make sure that
there is nothing to indicate an attempt at using “unfair” means.
6. During an examination students are not permitted to leave the lecture-rooms. Any student
leaving the building will be considered to have completed the exam and will not be allowed to
re-enter the building/examination hall.
7. Students who boycott any exam will forfeit their marks, and have to face disciplinary action.
8. Students submitting their assignment late stand to lose marks.
16 XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

9. Internal marks are declared at the end of the semester on the college notice boards. Three days
are given following the putting up of the marks to alert the office about any errors that may have
occurred (it is therefore advisable that students keep a written personal record of all their marks
with respect to first internal and second internal examinations). No appeals will be entertained
after this time period. After due consideration of the appeals and justifiable corrections,
a list of the final internal marks to be sent to the University will be made public.
Note :- Marks statements are issued to parents or guardians at the end of the semesters on a
written request at the college office.
Students' Responsibilities :
XICA students must realize that they must be the guardians of its traditions and ideals both
in the institute and outside it. Their conduct should at all times reflect their legitimate pride in their
institute and all it stands for. They should remember that they are expected to learn at Xavier's far
more than how to pass their examinations. They are in a period of training designed to create in
them a critical awareness of the true reality in our country. Since they are among the few who have
access to higher education in India, they must acquire the kind of skills and values that will
transform society.

In practical terms, the following points need to be noted:

1. Students should at all times show their professors the honour and respect which are their due.
They should greet them whenever they meet them in the institute or outside.
XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 17

2. Students are encouraged to know their teachers, and give them an opportunity to know them
too, outside class. Students must contact staff members who are available for
consultation in the staff room when necessary, whether to discuss a subject, get help
for a competition, for guidance and counselling, or even for a casual chat.
3. Students must respect the authorities and teaching staff of other institutions. When they have
occasion to visit other colleges, Xavierites should scrupulously observe the traditions and
regulations of those institutions, and refrain from any action that might disturb their peace and
order.

the Director immediately with what has happened. This training in honesty will stand them in
good stead in later life.
3. Students should scrupulously respect the belongings of their fellow students. Should they
discover any lost or forgotten articles, they should deliver them immediately to the institute
office. The office will put up a notice regarding all lost property instructing the owner to collect it
as soon as possible. Students who are found in unlawful possession of another's property are
liable to instant dismissal from the institute.

24 XAVIER INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Sports :-
Xavier institutions all over the world give high priority to sports and games, in keeping with the
Jesuit tradition: a healthy mind in a healthy body! Since sports and games are an integral part of
education at Xavier's, the management feels responsible for the academic welfare of the sports-
persons. Emphasis is laid on creating a healthy balance between the class-room and the play-field.
Due credit is given to the time and effort spent in training, but care is taken to ensure that sports-
persons do not get carried away by their enthusiasm for sports to the detriment of their studies.

The following rules must therefore be faithfully observed:

Sports-persons must be regular with and begin as well as end their practice sessions on time so as
to be able to attend all their lectures regularly.
During tournaments some concessions regarding class-attendance are granted to sports-persons
who are directly involved, provided the director is duly informed.
Sports-persons are not exempted from class-tests or examinations. If tournaments occur on such
days, alternate arrangements will be made only for those directly involved.
For all practical purposes, sports-persons will be treated on par with other institute students and
will not be granted special privileges where academic matters are concerned.
Sports-persons must take the opportunity they get to train themselves to organize their sports
activity in such a way as to ensure that they have sufficient time for their personal work and study.
Their reward will be the character they build up for themselves by being persons who can balance
work and play, their sense of responsibility, their power to discipline themselves, their
achievements
