INTRODUCITON TO ELECTRICAL MACHINE ASSIGNMENT -I

1. For the magnetic circuit shown below, the relative permeability of the ferromagnetic
material of the core is 1300. Neglect leakage and fringing. All dimensions are in cm,
and the magnetic material has a square Cross-sectional area. Determine the air gap flux
and the magnetic field intensity in the air gap.
(a) Draw the equivalent magnetic circuit
(b) Determine the air gap flux, air gap flux density and the magnetic field intensity in
the air gap.
Permeability of air may be taken as, (𝜇0 = 4𝜋𝑥10−7 )

2. It is desired to achieve a time varying magnetic flux density in the air gap of the
magnetic circuit of Fig.2(a) of the form
𝐵𝑔 = 𝐵0 + 𝐵1 sin 𝜔𝑡
Where 𝐵0 = 0.5 T and 𝐵1 =0.25 T. The dc field 𝐵0 is to be created by a NdFeB permanent
magnet, whereas the time varying field is to be created by a time varying current.
Assume the permeability of the iron is infinite and neglect the fringing effect.

(a) For the air gap dimensions given inFig.2 (a), find the magnet length d if the magnet
area 𝐴𝑚 equals the air gap area 𝐴𝑔 . Fig.2 (b) gives the demagnetization curve of NdFeB
permanent magnet.

(b) Find the excitation current required to achieve the desired time varying air

3. A 10 kVA, 2500/250 V, single phase transformer gave the following results:

Open circuit Test: 250 V, 0.8 A, 50 W(on LV Side)
Short circuit Test: 60 V, 3A, 45 W(Secondary short-circuited)
(a) Equivalent circuit parameters referred to LV side
(b) The efficiency at full load and 0.8 power factor lagging
(c) Load (kVA) at which the maximum efficiency occurs
(d) Voltage regulation at rated load and 0.8 p.f leading
(e) Secondary terminal voltage at rated load and 0.8 p.f lagging.

4. A 400V/100V, KVA, 2 winding, single phase transformer is to be employed as an

auto transformer to supply 400V circuit from a 500V source. When tested as a 2
winding transformer at rated load, 0.85 power factor lagging its efficiency is 97%.
i) Determine its KVA rating as an auto transformer.
ii) Find its efficiency as an auto transformer
