The modern English alphabet is a Latin alphabet consisting of 26 letters,
each having an upper- and lower-case form. It originated around the 7th
century from Latin script. Since then, letters have been added or removed
to give the current Modern English alphabet of 26 letters with no
diacritics, digraphs, nor special characters. The word alphabet is a
compound of the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, alpha and beta.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabetic system
of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin script. It was devised by
the International Phonetic Association in the late 19th century as a
standardized representation of speech sounds in written form. The IPA is
used by lexicographers, foreign language students and
teachers, linguists, speech–language pathologists, singers,
actors, constructed language creators and translators.
