MSc INDIVIDUAL PROJECT in

SAFETY AND RELIABILITY ENGINEERING

&
SAFETY AND RELIABILITY ENGINEERING

Types of Project Support

(i) FULL INDUSTRY PLACEMENT. The project is defined by the company (subject to academic approval)
and the student conducts the project at the company’s premises. The industry supervisor is not
involved in marking the project dissertation but would be required to assess the student’s conduct in
implementing the project work.

(ii) PARTIAL INDUSTRY PLACEMENT. The project is defined by the company (subject to academic
approval) but the student carries out the work at the University. The industry supervisor provides
advice to the student during the project through about 5 one-hour meetings, either at the company or
at the University. The industry supervisor is not involved in marking the project dissertation but would
be required to assess the student’s conduct in implementing the project work.

Project Description

Background and Justification for the Project (minimum 100 words):

Ammonia is emerging as the clear frontrunner for transporting hydrogen,

because it has a much higher density as a carrier. In its pure gas form,
ammonia can be liquefied easily at room temperature using extremely low
pressure, facilitating high-volume transport.

Its adaptability and the ability to store and transport hydrogen, a pure and
effective energy carrier, are the key to its potential.

Ammonia can be produced using a number of renewable energy-based

techniques. One of these is electrolysis, where renewable electricity is used
to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Ammonia is then produced by
combining hydrogen and nitrogen. Given its toxicity and reactivity, the
understanding of safety and effective transport of ammonia are essential
for its use.

Hence there are several questions that must be addressed: Leak and
rupture scenarios of accidental releases for pipelines are3 considered.
What are the toxic effects for these pressurised and refrigerated releases.

There will be considered the use of consequence models to demonstrate

the potential hazard distances as part of these credible scenarios
expressed as probability effects.
