ELECTRICAL CALCULATIONS
1.0 PURPOSE
This practice provides standards, procedures, nomenclature, and the mandatory requirements for
preparation and execution of project calculations.
The electrical calculation work process is further described in the Activity Based Work Flow Diagram
000.265.8840.
2.0 APPLICATION
This practice applies to Electrical Engineering calculations performed under contract or are required for
the basis of the design. Electrical Engineering calculations include hand calculations and computer-
generated calculations such as those performed using spreadsheets, Smart Plant Electrical (SPEL),
and electrical engineering analysis programs.
The Electrical Project Lead holds the overall responsibility for the correct implementation and
application of this practice on the project.
This practice does not apply to calculations performed by suppliers or third party agencies.

6.0 REQUIREMENTS
6.1 The Electrical Project Lead will initiate and monitor the development of electrical
calculations.
The overall work process for electrical calculations is shown in the Activity Based Estimate
Flow Diagram (000.265.8840).
Enforces that the electrical calculations are based on relevant project technical documents
(specifications, single line diagrams, electrical design criteria, etc.), and applicable codes
and standards.

ELECTRICAL CALCULATIONS
The following electrical calculations may be developed and performed on the project:
6.1.1 The Electrical Project Lead will determine the type of application as related to
the creation of calculations.
6.1.2 The Electrical Project Lead will verify the calculation software used has been
approved for use on the project.
6.1.3 The Electrical Project Lead will select and validate additional tools and software
required for calculations.
Validation process includes integrity, accuracy and correctness of selected
additional tools and software.

ELECTRICAL CALCULATIONS
6.2 The Electrical Project Lead will drive electrical calculations development towards the
lowest Total Installed Cost and safety in design consistent with the project Class of
Facility Quality (CFQ), the Contract, and the Scope of Work.
Requirements for implementing Cost Competitive Engineering and Design Activities are
described in Practice 000.200.1400.
Documentation that supports cost competitive design changes (such as Technical Deviation
Notices (TDN), Design Decision Records (DDR), or Variances) is prepared, issued, and
documented in accordance with the project procedures.
Requirements for the development of a project specific Class of Facility Quality are described
in Practice 000.100.1600.
6.3 The Electrical Engineer will create calculations as per project requirements.
This includes the following activities:
Releases calculations for checking and incorporates comments or verifies that comments
have been incorporated into the calculations.
Follows and complies with the requirements established in related project job bulletins.
6.4 The Electrical Project Lead will determine whether a re-calculation is necessary once
data provided by Vendor has been received.

ELECTRICAL CALCULATIONS
6.5 The Electrical Engineer will maintain and file calculations as per project (retention)
requirements.
Refer to the Project File Index and Retention Schedule (PRI&RS).
The requirements for project file index and retention schedule are described in Practice
000.037.1101.
The project close out requirements for records disposition and retention are described in the
Project Procedures Manual (PPM) Practice 000.100.0060, Section 17 Project Close Out and
associated project Job Bulletins.
