IasiMUN 2023

Committee: Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee;

Topic: Addressing the integrations of refugees in Asian Countries;

Country: The Arab Republic of Syria;

Delegate: Mihai Maia, Colegiul Național Iași.

Every day, millions of displaced people are struggling in a country they know nothing about,
surrounded by people who speak a different language, and are being discriminated and abused.
We are talking about an overwhelming number of refugees, such as 35.3 million, of which the
majority are hosted by Turkey and Iran. Most of the refugees in Asia originate from Syria or
Afghanistan, countries that are currently instable.

As of May 2022, the countries with the largest IDP value were Ukraine holding a great number
of 8 million, then Syria with 7.6 million persons, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the
Congo and the list goes on.

The most significant mass of displaced individuals in Asia comes from the civil war going on
inside of Syria. It all started in 2011 when the protests held in the neighboring countries, which
now hold the name of The Arab Spring, also influenced the people of Syria. They began holding
protests against the president Bashar Al-Assad until it became a civil war between the regime
and the resistance which is still taking place to this day.

During the battle, Syria has provided IDPs campsites which consist of tents and food and is
cooperating with CCCM (Camp Coordination and Camp Management) in this regard. UN’s
internationally led organizations like UNHCR and UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund)
have also been involved in the Syrian refugee crisis.
In the matter of Syrian response towards the refugee crisis, they have formed in 1942, with the
help of International Committee of the Red Cross, a humanitarian nonprofit organization - the
Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which has reached 14 branches all over Syria. SARC has the prime
goal to help the refugees with a psycho-social and health programme. Syrian president Bashar
Al-Assad has shown interest in ending the war. In May 2023, he was welcomed back into the
Arab League seeking assistance in his battle from the allied countries "I hope that it marks the
beginning of a new phase of Arab action for solidarity among us, for peace in our region,
development and prosperity instead of war and destruction," Assad told the gathering in Jeddah.

Addressing this issue should be a priority because it has a lot of impact on the population and
ethnicity diversity in different regions of Asia. Here is a solution we have come up with that not
only solves the integration of refugees, but also the statelessness issue and discriminations:

 First, it is imperative to locate all refugees that have not been registered,
that have crossed the borders illegally… And to do that, we should not punish them, but
to show sympathy towards them and offer an allowance for whoever comes and registers
themselves;
 Secondly, to break the language barrier and awkwardness or violent
responses based on discriminatory factors, we should make information offices and
special educational services that will teach them about the language and traditions of the
host country. We should also have a bureau that instructs the refugees about the legal and
financial framework of the host country.

We will encourage the refugees to integrate in the community. We will be treating them equally
regardless of the fact that most of them are unstable, promoting them to become active people
and contribute to the community they will live in until the end of the crisis.
