Assignment 2 (”The Garden Party”)

After watching the two videos I chose three things to talk about which are social classes ,
empathy, and Laura’s journey in self-discovery which are interconnected ideas and affect
each other. Mansfield portrays the conflict of social classes and empathy between them, and
how social status affects human empathy. While it is assume that a human remains a human
regardless of his class, however Mrs. Sheridan sees their party more important than a poor
work-man dead. This action is spotting the light on their privilege and lack of sympathy
towards those less fortunate. Laura’s journey in self- discovery leads to her moral awakening
and starts thinking about her family and social circle which makes her confused about
committing her social obligation and personal conscience. I chose these three ideas because
they represent the central themes of the story.
