MARKING GUIDELINE -2-
PLATER’S THEORY N2

QUESTION 1: MACHINES

1.1  Fixed guards

 Interlocking guards
 Automatic guards (3)

1.2 The main function of this machine is to rapidly remove metal to a form of a
round, square or other shaped hole by using a top punch and bottom die. (3)

1.3 A–Punch
B–Emergency switch
C–Angle iron shear
D–Round and square-bar shear (4)
[10]

QUESTION 2: ROLLING AND BENDING

2.1  Set the machine to suit the angle-iron size and initial diameter.
 After allowing an extra length on either side of the angle-iron, push the
angle-iron section through one end of the machine and between the rollers.
 Allow the angle-iron section to move forward and reverse, until it has
recached the initial diameter.
 Remove the ring, cut the extra length of the ends, clean and place back in
the roller.
 Roll the section to the final diameter and remove from the machine. (5)

2.2 A = 290 /2 = 145

= 145 – 6
= 139

B = (380 – 12)
= 368 mm

C = 290 – 12
= 278 mm

Total length = 2(A )+2(B) + C

= 2(139) + 2(368) + 278
= 278 + 736 + 278
= 1292 mm (5)

QUESTION 3: JOINING OF STEEL SECTION

3.1 To hold parts in position so that a number of items can be tack weld and
easily removed before final welding is done. (3)

3.2  They must be properly stored or isolated to prevent accidental damage.

 Jigs are complicated to design.
 They must be numbered for identification for future use.
 They are expensive to produce.
 Jig are depended on the operation. (Any other relevant answers) (5)
[8]

QUESTION 4: GENERAL PIPE WORK

4.1 A–Chalk
B–Three point marking arm
C–Channel frame
D–Centre-line index
E–Calibrated protractor (5)

4.2

(2)

Angle of cut 0 = 45 ÷ 2
= 22.5 ÷ 2
= 11.25° (3)
[10]

QUESTION 5: STEEL STRUCTURES

A–Queen post
B–Gusset
C–Tie/strut
D–Wall plate
E–Eave / Overhang
F–Shoe plate [6]

QUESTION 6: TEMPLATES

6.1

6.2  To avoid repetitive marking off of the same dimensions.

 To avoid unnecessary wastage of material.

6.3  Marking off a large number of exactly the same from a template is a much
quicker method.
 More accurate than measuring and marking each item individually.
(3 × 2) [6]

QUESTION 7: METALS

7.1  To soften the steel so that machining processes may be carried out more
easily.
 To release internal stresses.
 To refine the grain structure.
 To reduce brittleness. (Any 2 × 1) (2)

7.2 7.2.1  Higher resistance to fatigue.

 Improves heat treating characteristics.
 Refine the structure of the steel.
 Endurance under heavy loads. (4)

7.2.2  Increase strength and toughness.

 Resist high temperature.
 Good magnetic properties.
 Increase heat and wear resistance. (4)

QUESTION 8: GAS WELDING AND CUTTING

8.1 Flame cleaning nozzles spread the heating flame so that mill scale, oxide
paint and grease can be removed from the surface of the work piece. (2)

8.2  Pressure of cutting oxygen too high

 Pre-heating flame too low
 Pre-heating flame too high
 Nozzle size (Any 2 × 1) (2)

8.3 The machine is used to gas cut one or more identical items and is
mechanically driven. (2)

8.4  Excessive melting of the top edge

 Undercut at the top of the cutting surface (2)

8.5 The parent metal is not melted, but instead the filled rod during the fusion
process. (2)
[10]

QUESTION 9: ARC WELDING

9.1 9.1.1

9.1.2

9.1.3

9.1.4

9.1.5

(5 × 1) (5)

9.2 9.2.1  Insufficient heat input

 Welding speed too fast
 Incorrect polarity when using dc current
 Incorrect joint design (4)

9.2.2  Excessive welding current
