Venn Diagrams

Objective:
• Students learn how to use Venn diagrams
• Students learn how Venn diagrams make data easier to understand

Supplies:
• White board/chalk board
• Writing material for the board

Procedure:
1. Ask students to compare the process of addition and multiplication.

2. Make two columns on the blackboard, one for addition and the other for multiplication.

3. Write down the characteristics of each process under their respective headings.

4. Draw two large overlapping circles on the board and explain that it is a Venn diagram.

5. Explain that all the different characteristics are written in the individual circles.

6. Have the students call out the characteristics that make the two processes different and
write them down in the Venn diagram.

7. Explain that the similar characteristics are written in the overlapping portion. Write
them down in the Venn diagram.

8. Have students create Venn diagrams for two different objects of their choice.
