Author’s Notes
Culinarist is Not a Word
No, it’s not a word, but I wanted to name it something akin to the Artillerist. The actual term is Culinarian, which felt a bit off for me, but feel free to use Culinarian
if that makes you happy.

Senshi Hated Magic

The character from Delicious in Dungeon is adamantly against the shortcuts provided by magic. I could’ve made another fighter subclass out of him, but I feel like
taking so much time with manual labor might not translate very well to an in-game experience. Hence, this subclass is “inspired by” Senshi, and the class fantasy
this enables is cooking magical beings and getting unique buffs from them.

Four Features at 3rd Level

This subclass breaks from tradition by having 4 features at 3rd level. The other official artificers have tool proficiency, subclass spells, and the main feature. The
reason the Culinarist has 4 is that I needed a feature that could harvest and store food ingredients and another feature to actually outline the rules surrounding
meal prep and consumption.

Isn’t Cooking Wisdom-Based?

Conventionally, cooking is a Wisdom-based activity since it concerns the senses, but I designed the Culinarists to integrate sciences, studies, and techniques into
the class fantasy.

I’m Not a Cook

I am not a cook; I don't know how to cook, and I would probably be a terrible cook. I think I'm pretty good at eating, though.

Pitfalls and Advice

Upkeep. Unfortunately, there’s a heavier burden on the DM if they allow this at their table. Players will have a tendency to optimize and will want to seek out
specific creatures to hunt and harvest for their benefit. There’s also the matter of ingredient upkeep for the Culinarist player and having to keep a healthy stock of
ingredients at all times.

Mutual Agreement. The first and most important advice for both DMs and prospective Culinarist players is to agree on how ingredients acquisition. Mutually agree
on whether every ingredient will have to be hunted in-game, whether hunting can be done between sessions, or if acquisition can be handwaved in the middle of
a session. Remember that you can have a session 0 to recalibrate with the table even while the campaign is already underway and that you can do so in a group
call or a chat group.

Handwave. My advice for the DM is to handwave or short-hand the process of hunting certain creatures if doing so would take too much time from a session.
Have the players make some checks or divide a certain amount of damage among the party to simulate the hunting process. Of course, it’s also sensible to
decline any request to hunt when the current location seems unreasonable for certain types of ingredients, like hunting for fey ingredients in the Shadowfell.

Between Sessions. DMs can also resolve ingredient hunting offline between sessions. This helps with upkeep for the Culinarist and avoids distractions mid-game.
The only downside is having fewer opportunities to do some worldbuilding since this happens outside of the table.

Signal Ahead. For Culinarist players, mention ahead of time that you want to get a specific type of ingredient so that the DM will have time to prepare for it in the
session or resolve it offline.

Dealing with Humanoids

If the idea of cannibalism makes anybody at the table uncomfortable, consider reflavoring humanoid ingredients to be herbs and spices unique to their culture, or
outright replacing the ingredients with any of other creature types as loot.

My Wife is the MC is a YouTube channel run by DM V, who creates homebrew content that translates characters from popular media into narratively themed D&D
5e mechanics. This includes creating classes, subclasses, and magic items, or even putting homebrewed characters from various anime, movies, or video game
titles into the D&D fights or D&D versions of their settings. By homebrewing content with the source material as a priority, we aim to capture how a pop culture

DM V also runs single-player campaigns with his wife, who plays the channel’s titular MC as they take on the evils of a post-apocalyptic world in customized
