Assessment: Reaction Papers

Washington, Maynila

Legibility and Readability

Legibility is a necessary prerequisite to readability; by affecting legibility, these factors

also affect the readability of any type. A typeface rendered at a very small size will not
be legible or readable. Increasing the font size will eventually make it legible, but it may
not make it readable.

To explore the difference between legibility and readability of reading material, it is

important to understand that legibility is a component of readability.

Legibility is an informal measure of how easy it is to distinguish one letter from another
in a particular typeface.

Readability is about the reader – the ease with which a reader can successfully decipher,
process, and make meaning of the text read. Typographical features of the text are
critical; letter shape, size, and spacing all meaningfully impact fluency and
comprehension. The choice of typeface, characteristics of the type, and page layout can
create a better (or worse) reading experience. Better readability is the gateway to
enhanced learning and greater productivity.

Readability determines how easy or difficult it is to understand a piece of text. Different

elements of your writing can contribute to readability, like word choice. Choosing a
word that’s unfamiliar or complex when a simpler word serves the same purpose can
lead to poor readability—for example, writing “perturbed” instead of “worried”.

Misplacement or Non-placement of Punctuations

Punctuations (separate lesson: see 2023 06 07 COACHING Punctuations)

Proper Spelling

Communication: good spelling facilitates communication. By following the same rules for
spelling words, we can all understand the text we read.
Comprehension: good spelling avoids confusion. In a way spelling is a bit like sports. It’s
up to the person passing the ball to make sure the receiver actually catches it. The same
goes for spelling. If you write with intent and proper spelling, the receiver of that text
will understand it.

Distraction: poor spelling distracts the reader and they lose focus. It’s hard to read a text
for comprehension when it’s full of spelling errors.

Impressions last: when you have people read something you’ve written and that text is
full of spelling errors, it does not leave a good impression. We should care about the
fundamental part good spelling plays in our language.

Examples:

Cleanliness

Impressions last: when you have people read something you’ve written and that text is
full of dirt such as erasures and stains, it does not leave a good impression.

Use of All-caps
Studies have been conducted on the readability and legibility of all caps text. Scientific
testing from the 20th century onward has generally indicated that all caps text is less
legible and readable than lower-case text.

Messages typed completely in capital letters are often equated on social

media to shouting and other impolite or argumentative behaviors. This became a
mainstream interpretation with the advent of networked computers, from the 1980s
onward. However, a similar interpretation was already evidenced by written sources
that predated the computing era, in some cases by at least a century, and the textual
display of shouting or emphasis was still not a settled matter by 1984.
