Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers

MEASURE Test your knowledge!

Juan wants to travel the world! But, traveling can cost a lot of money, and they
only have PHP 20,593 with them.

Juan lives in Manila, and they want to know which places they can afford to go
on their budget. In the table below are the costs of plane rides from Manila to
the places they want to travel to.

Can you help Juan answer the questions below?

1. Which of the locations is the cheapest to travel to?
2. Which of the locations is the most expensive to travel to?
3. Which is cheaper to travel to: Nairobi or Toronto?
4. Among the locations that Juan can travel to, which is the most expensive?
5. Among the locations that Juan cannot travel to, which is the cheapest?

The Symbols of Comparison

Before we start comparing numbers, let’s familiarize ourselves with the symbols of
comparison. There are three possible ways to tell the greater number between two:

> Greater than symbol A is greater than B A>B

< Less than symbol A is less than B A<B
= Equal to symbol A is equal to B A=B

We will be using these symbols to compare values and show their order!

Comparing Whole Numbers

In comparing whole numbers, you need to remember your place values and your
simple number line!

Example 1
Fill in the blank with the proper symbol of comparison: 25,467 _____ 25,533.

1. Write numbers in a column, and align their place values.

2. Compare each digit from left to right!

QUICK TIP!
If the digits differ, you can easily know which value is greater by remembering
the placement of digits on the number line! The greater digit denotes the
whole number that is greater between the two. Do not proceed to the next
digits!

Mitsa

Since 4 < 5, we know that 25,467 < 25,533 as well!

Example 2
Let’s have another example! Fill in the blank with the proper symbol of comparison:
999 _____ 9,999.

As you can see, 999 does not have a value for the thousands place! Therefore, we
can automatically say that 999 < 9,999, because 9,999 has a greater number of digits
than 999. You don’t need to compare the individual digits anymore; you just have to
check the number of digits that each number has.

AGAIN, REMEMBER!
If one number has a greater number of whole digits than the other, the former
is definitely greater.

Ordering Whole Numbers

Before we arrange whole numbers, here are the two ways of ordering them:

Ascending order: values increase as the list progresses (1, 2, 3, ...)

Descending order: values decrease as the list progresses (5, 4, 3, …)

The process of ordering whole numbers is the same as that of comparing them!
Let’s have an example.

Whole Numbers

Example 3
Arrange the following numbers in increasing order: 12,534, 5,687, 46,922, 54,556,
12,535.

1. Write the numbers in a column, and align their place values.

2. Compare each digit from left to right.

As seen above, the same rules in comparing numbers apply. In the ten thousands
place, the greatest digit is 5; therefore, 54,556 is the greatest number in the list, with
46,922 following it. Moreover, 5,687 does not have a ten thousands digit; thus, it is
the smallest number in the list.

Now, we have the arrangement: 5,687 < 12,534 _____ 12,535 < 46,922 < 54,556.

Mitsa
Since 12,534 and 12,535 have the same ten thousands digit, we move on to the next
digits and find that the numbers only differ at the ones place. Upon inspection, the
ones digit of 12,535 is greater than that of 12,534; therefore, 12,535 has a greater
value.

The following arrangement is in ascending order:

5,687 < 12,534 < 12,535 < 46,922 < 54,556

FOR ORDERING NUMBERS...

Remember to do the following:
1. Check the number of digits! The one with the greatest number of whole
digits is the largest, and the one with the least is the smallest.
2. Compare digits in same place values from left to right.
3. Finalize your answers!

SUMMARIZE Wrap it up!

There are three possible symbols of comparison: greater than (>), less than (<),
and equal to (=). These symbols are used to compare and order whole numbers!

When comparing and ordering whole numbers, the rule of thumb is to line up all
the place values of the given numbers in a column, and compare the digits from left
to right. The greater digit denotes a greater value! Moreover, if a number does not
have a digit for a place value, that automatically means that the number that does is
greater!

There are two ways of arranging a list of numbers: ascending (increasing) or

descending (decreasing) order. The same process as comparing numbers applies!
