CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The goal of the research methodology is to provide a comprehensive

understanding of the steps involved in assessing the influence of PBL on the

Science and Mathematics learning experiences of Grade 11 STEM students. It

also aims to analyze the findings while maintaining ethical standards and rigor in

data collection and analysis procedures. This will cover the study's design as well

as participant information, the location for data gathering, the tools that will be

used, the method for collecting data, and data analysis.

1. Research Design

The research design for this study is a comprehensive investigation

about the impact of project-based learning (PBL) on enhancing Science and

Mathematics skills among Grade-11 STEM students at Batangas College of

Arts and Sciences, Inc. Using a qualitative research design, the researchers

would emphasize the ‘why’ or the cause of a certain phenomenon. It involves

the use of non-numerical data. Specifically, this takes a phenomenological

approach to qualitative study. The researchers would set aside prior beliefs

about the phenomenon in order to explore other people’s idea and

experiences. The main objectives of the research are to know how PBL

influences students' capacity to solve science and mathematics problems,

examine its impact on the retention of knowledge in Mathematics and Science

concepts, identify its advantages and disadvantages in Science and

Mathematics subjects, determine if students' participation in PBL activities

affects comprehension and application of Science and Mathematics principles,

and explore the ways in which PBL influences the students’ overall proficiency

in the subjects.

2. Participants of the Study

Since gathering data from all grade 11 STEM students would be

difficult with the limited time and power available, the study would use a

purposive sampling technique in order to get the needed data for the

study. The study involves Grade 11 students enrolled in the Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand students at

Batangas College of Arts and Science, Inc. both men and women at the

age of sixteen to eighteen years of age, with have different academic

backgrounds. By focusing on Grade 11 STEM students, the research aims

to understand how PBL impacts the learning experiences and academic

outcomes in Science and Mathematics subjects of Grade 11 STEM

students.

3. Setting of the Study

The study would be done at Batangas College of Arts and Sciences

Inc. (BCAS) during the academic year 2023-2024. Located in Brgy.

Bagongpook Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines. BCAS provided an ideal

setting for conducting the research about the effects of Project-Based

Learning (PBL) on Grade 11 STEM students' proficiency in Science and

Mathematics, since BCAS is known for its Science and Mathematics

subjects.

4. Data Gathering Instrument

The data gathering instrument for this research study on the

influence of Project-Based Learning (PBL) on Grade 11 STEM students'

proficiency in Science and Mathematics at Batangas College of Arts and

Sciences Inc. this includes an interview by purposive sampling. To be able

to have a comprehensive data on how PBL is experienced. Semi-

structured interviews would be used in the study to properly explore the

topic. The interview would consist of close-ended questions designed to

view the students’ perceptions, attitudes, and experiences with PBL.

Through interviews, the researchers seek to uncover the impact of PBL to

students’ problem-solving skills, comprehension, participation, knowledge,

and other benefits and drawbacks on Science and Mathematics subject.

5. Ethical Consideration

Prioritizing moral considerations will be the study approach in order

to safeguard the participants’ privacy and well-being. All participants will get

comprehensive consent papers prior to participating in the study, and they

will be assured that they can withdraw from it at any moment without

incurring any penalties. The confidentiality of participant information will be

guaranteed via the use of anonymized data in reports and publications.

Moreover, the research would adhere to ethical standards supplied by

relevant authorities.

6. Data Gathering Procedure

The data gathering procedure for the research study on the

influence of Project-Based Learning (PBL) on Grade 11 STEM students'

proficiency in Science and Mathematics at Batangas College of Arts and

Sciences Inc. (BCAS) involves a planned series of steps to ensure the

systematic collection of comprehensive data.

To begin, the procedure would start by obtaining all needed

approvals and permissions from the research adviser to conduct the

study. This step would ensure that the research has been approved and

has followed all the regulations of research and the school. Additionally,

while waiting for the approval, the researcher would finalize all data

gathering instruments.

After, the researchers would proceed to find students who would

serve as the research’s respondents. By using a stratified purposive

sampling technique, the researchers would be able to determine the

respondents. The respondents would only come from Grade 11 STEM

students at BCAS. An informed consent form would be given to the

students to sign to be able to know the purpose of the interview would

be. A parental consent form would also be given to students below the

age of 18, to ensure transparency and respect to the respondent’s

autonomy.

Once the respondents have answered the consent forms the

interview to gather data may begin. The respondents would be excused

during any available free time. After, the researchers would once again

explain the purpose of the research and ask semi-structured questions.

The interview would be audio-recorded with consent to the respondent

and would then be transcribed into words.

After collecting enough data from the respondents, the research

would start analyzing the data. The qualitative data from the interviews

will be analyzed and arranged thematically to find common key themes,

insights, and narratives related to the students’ experiences with PBL.

Finally, the findings would be compiled into a report, following

academic standards, and guidelines for research. The report would

highlight the key findings, insights, and recommendations, which may be

shared to teachers, administrators, and stake holders, to inform future

practices and decision-making regarding PBL as a method of learning in

BCAS.
