Members of the royal family have led an outpouring of tributes from around the world at the
death of Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth. Buckingham Palace has spoken of the
Queen’s “deep sorrow” after her husband of 73 years, who had been by her side throughout her
reign, died peacefully at Windsor Castle aged 99 on Friday night (Australian time).
Flags at Buckingham Palace and government buildings across the United Kingdom were lowered
to half-mast, and within an hour of the announcement the public began to lay flowers outside
Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. However, mourners have been urged not to gather and
leave tributes at royal residences, and the public has been asked to stay away from funeral events
because of the coronavirus pandemic. An online book of condolence has been launched on the Royal
Family’s official website for people to leave messages of sympathy.
The prince died two months short of his 100th birthday. He had recently spent four weeks in
hospital with an infection where he was treated for a heart condition before being discharged and
returned to Windsor early in March. The Duke of Edinburgh had been by his wife’s side throughout
her 69-year reign, the longest in British history, and during that time earned a reputation for a tough,
no-nonsense attitude, and a propensity for occasional gaffes. A Greek prince, Philip married
Elizabeth in 1947, and together they had four children, eight grandchildren, and nine great
grandchildren. He played a key role helping the monarchy adapt to a changing world in the
post-World War II period, and behind the walls of Buckingham Palace was the one key figure the
Queen could trust and turn to, knowing he could tell her exactly what he thought.
The death of the Duke comes in the midst of the worst public health crisis for generations as
Britain and countries around the globe reel from the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Philip will not have a state funeral nor lie in state for the public to pay their respects ahead of the
funeral, the College of Arms said, with arrangements revised to meet coronavirus restrictions.

B. Read the following passage and then choose the best answer.
Although noise, commonly defined as unwanted sound, is a widely recognized form of pollution, it is very
difficult to measure because the discomfort experienced by different individuals is highly subjective and
therefore, variable. Exposure to lower levels of noise may be slightly irritating, whereas exposure to higher
levels may actually cause hearing loss. Particularly in congested urban areas, the noise produced as a
by-product of our advancing technology causes physical and psychological harm, and detracts from the quality
of life for those who are exposed to it.
Unlike the eyes, which can be covered by the eyelids against strong light, the ear has no lid, and is therefore,
always open and vulnerable; noise enters without protection.
Noise causes effects that the hearer cannot control and to which the body never becomes accustomed. Loud
noises instinctively signal danger to any organism with a hearing mechanism, including human beings. In
response, heartbeat and respiration increase, blood vessels become tighter, the skin pales, and muscles tense. In
fact, there is a general increase in functioning brought about by the flow of adrenaline released in response to
fear, and some of these responses exist even longer than the noise, occasionally as long as thirty minutes after
the sound has stopped.
Because noise is unavoidable in a complex, industrial society, we are constantly responding in the same way
that we would respond to danger. Recently, researchers have concluded that noise and our response may be
much more than an annoyance. It may be a serious threat to physical and psychological health and well-being,
causing damage not only to the ear and brain but also to the heart and stomach. We have long known that
hearing loss is America's number one nonfatal health problem, but now we are learning that some of us with
heart disease and ulcers may be victims of noise as well. Fetuses exposed to noise tend to be overactive, they
cry easily and they are more sensitive to gastrointestinal problems after birth. In addition, the psychic effect of
noise is very important. Nervousness, irritability, tension, and anxiety increase, affecting the quality of rest
during sleep, and the efficiency of activities during waking hours, as well as the way that we interact with each
other.
Question 36: According to the passage, what is noise?
A. unwanted sound B. physical and psychological harm
C. congestion D. a by-product of technology
Question 37: Why is noise difficult to measure?
A. Because it causes hearing loss.
B. Because it is unwanted.
C. Because people become accustomed to it.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of
the questions
Although we are all natural born liars, most of us seem to take it for granted that lying is bad. However, psychologists
argue that lying is just as important as any other social skill we possess.
We learn the art of deception very early in life; by the age of five, we have not only become quite efficient at lying, but
we have also learnt how to read people’s reactions and act accordingly.
For example, if someone is avoiding direct eye contact with us, this makes us think that we're being lied to so we might
lie, too. A person's smile is also a giveaway. A genuine smile makes the skin near the eyes crease, whereas a "put on" smile
doesn't have the same effect on the facial features as a real one.
Even though both women and men know how to watch out for clues that somebody is lying, it is a fact that women are
far more skillful liars than men. Despite this, women are also more affected by other people's feelings, so they have more
sympathy for them. As a result, women tend to be more willing to have an honest conversation.

The UK has a vast variety of higher education opportunities to offer students with over 100 universities offering various
degree programs for students from the UK and around the world. In the UK about one-third of all students go on to some

For graduate or masters programs, they are generally shorter in length and undertaken after graduation of your
undergraduate program. Some professional degrees like medicine, veterinary, law, etc. have longer programs that can be as
much as five years.
From 2007, universities in the UK are allowed to charge students from the UK up to £3,070 per year (depending on the
school and location). For students from the EU, you will also only have to pay the same fees as students from the UK, but
international students from the rest of the world will have to pay the full school fees which will vary depending on the
school. These fees for international students can range anywhere from £4,000 per year right up to £18,000 per year or more.
