Would you know what to do if you found yourself alone on a tropical island? It can happen so it's worth
being prepared. Here are some tips.
Your first priority is to look for drinking water. You will die in only a couple of days if you don't get
enough liquid. Go inland from the beach and look for waterfalls or streams. The water in these will be
purer and less likely to make you sick. Since this is a tropical island, there are probably loads of coconut
palms around. Climb a tree and grab a green coconut. You can drink the liquid inside it to prevent
dehydration. Whatever you do, don't drink sea water, because it's full of salt and so it will make you even
thirstier than you were before.
Next you should try to collect some palm leaves. Use them to make a little hut. Apart from protecting
you from the sun, wind and rain, they can also be used as blankets. You'll need these at night as it can be
chilly. Build your hut close to the beach so you can still see any passing ships or boats that might come
to your rescue. After building your hut you will be getting hungry. You can try fishing or hunting but
insects are also food. You won’t probably feel like eating these on your first day. Eventually, however,
you'll be very hungry and you won't be so choosy. Coconuts are full of protein too and their oil can be
used to soothe sunburnt skin. Your main task now is to attract attention. Use large stones to write a
message on the sand. Whatever you write should be visible from the air. Keep your fingers crossed that
someone in a plane will see it and come to your rescue!
