Chapter 1

POPULATION & HOUSING

Data on size, distribution and demographic characteristics of the population and the stock
and condition of housing units are essential in the planning and decision making process of
governmental instrumentalities and private business alike. The data provide the bases in
determining what, where, how, and when public services and facilities and interventions
should be put in place. The impact of services, programs and projects implemented are
measured vis-à-vis the effects on the socioeconomic well-being of the populace, as the
ultimate beneficiaries of governance and development. Entrepreneurs and corporate
executives and managers in the private sector use the data in making decisions on the level,
form, programming, and distribution of resources that will be invested. The return of their
investments are largely determined by their response to the market created by the demand
of the consumers and readiness to supply goods and services that satisfy the needs and
capabilities of the public.

This chapter presents data pertaining to the region and by province/city/municipality, where
available. The data series include the population counts during several censuses conducted
nationwide as well as the demographic characteristics, migration patterns and housing units.
Projected population of the region, which are estimated based on the result of the
demographic characteristics, migration patterns and housing units. Projected population of
the region, which are estimated based on the result of the population census is also
presented. The data sources are the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Technical
Advisory Group and Population Projection Unit.
