Answer Key
Worksheet 1
A. Fill in the blanks.
1) autotrophs
2) leaves
3) starch
4) chloroplasts
5) reduces
B. State whether the following are true or false. Correct the false statements.
1) false. Oxygen is released in the process of photosynthesis.
2) false. Autotrophs synthesise their own food using carbon dioxide and
water.
3) true
4) true
5) false. Chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis.
C. Give one word for the following:
1) nutrition
2) chlorophyll
3) iodine solution
4) roots
D. Answer the following questions.
1) The mode of nutrition in which organisms synthesise their own food using
carbon dioxide and water is called autotrophic nutrition. Green plants are
also called producers as they produce food for all living organisms.
Sunlight
Carbon dioxide + Water Glucose + Oxygen
Chlorophyll
3) To test the presence of starch in a leaf:
Procedure: Take a de-starched plant. Keep it in sunlight for 2 to 3 days. Pluck
a leaf. Place a leaf in a test tube and pour some alcohol in it. Heat some
water in a beaker and put the test tube containing the leaf into the beaker.
Chlorophyll dissolves in warm alcohol. The leaf, thus, loses its green colour
and becomes pale. This is required to clearly see any colour change on the
addition of iodine solution. Remove the leaf and pour some iodine solution
on it.
Observation: The colour of the leaf turns blue-black.
Conclusion: The leaf contains starch.
4) Chlorophyll is present in special structures called chloroplasts present in
the cells of the plant. Chlorophyll traps solar energy for the process of
photosynthesis.
Worksheet 2
A. Fill in the blanks.
1) Stomata
2) milky
3) anaerobically
4) carbon dioxide
B. State whether the following are true or false.
1) true
2) false
3) false
4) false
5) true
C. Unscramble the following words.
1) aerobic
2) sunlight
3) chlorophyll
4) stomata
5) Anaerobic
D. Give reasons for the following:
1) This is because in anaerobic respiration, glucose is partially broken down.
2) Plants and trees absorb the carbon dioxide produced by animals and thus,
help in purifying the air. They are, therefore, known as the lungs of the
earth.
3) Plants respire aerobically to produce energy from the food they prepare.
For this, they use oxygen gas. However, sometimes plants do not get a
sufficient amount of oxygen to carry out respiration. This happens if the soil
becomes waterlogged. In this case, plants respire anaerobically; however,
the amount of energy produced during anaerobic respiration is far less
compared to the amount produced due to aerobic respiration. This is
because glucose is partially broken down.
