For me, these are the take away messages:

* When we find our life’s purpose, even in the face of raw tragedy as Frankl did in a
concentration camp during WWII (and maybe even because of tragedy in his case), we will lead
fulfilling lives.
* We live minute by minute, hour by hour. Savor the successes, however small, in those minute-

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

I have read Man’s Search for Meaning twice through in the last few years.

The first time it was just by finding it on a book list. I got almost nothing out of it. I could have
barely told you what happened. My takeaway was look at the bright side of life.

The second time I read the book, I was searching for meaning after a break up. It hit like a
truck. I read it in a few sittings and bought some of Nietzsche’s work afterwards in hope to gain
more insight. It’s one of those works that can be revisited from time to time to remind us of the
lessons.

The book had a significant effect on my life. Reading it was a turning point, in a long period of
depression.

Since reading it, I've been careful to distinguish between "there's a reason for everything"
(which is poppycock) and "we can take meaning from everything." With that single concept, I
was able to integrate back into the world.

I love this book. How is it possible to write dispassionately of life in a concentration camp in
such way to engender great feeling in the reader? This book is not only about what happened
to Frankl but it also about how Frankl dealt with his experience. Frankl’s purpose in describing
his time in Auschwitz and other camps was not dwell on the horror, though there were plenty
of those, but instead to focus on how prisoners found meaning in their lives and how they

Frankl is highly overrated and unjustifiably so?
Since the book has been read by millions of poeple I’d be surprised if you were the only one
who didn’t like it.

And that’s OK.

However, I’d ask why you think is overrated and, more important, what you could have learned
from this book.

The simple fact that a man survived several concentration camps and managed to write a book
full of life and optimism to me is a monument and testament to humanity.

There is a part where Frankl himself, from his time as a therapist, tells the story of the older

What are the main points learned from Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search For
Related
Meaning"?
Being human is not being driven but being responsible for one’s own existence. And there are
three sources of meaning: in work(doing something significant), in love(caring for another
person), and in courage during difficult times.

A man can only find his/her meaning through self-transcendence. Only when we are not only
living for ourselves can we bring more true happiness into our lives.

We are responsible not for any set of circumstances but for the way we respond to those
circumstances. The inner strength can raise a man above his/her outward fate.

Related Did Viktor E. Frankl ever find meaning in his life, and how?
Frankl wrote, “(1) by creating a work or doing a deed; (2) by experiencing something or
encountering someone; and (3) by the attitude we take toward unavoidable suffering.”

Victor Frankl was a holocaust survivor whose book “The Meaning of Life” was an exploration of
how one comes to find meaning in living in the moment. Our very existence is sufficient to
provide meaning.
