12) what are the necessity of theories of failure? Discuss different theories of failures.

1. Design a socket and spigot type of cotter joint to transmit reversible load of 80 KN
2. A knuckle joint is to be design to connect two Mild Steel bars under a tensile load of 100 KN. The
allowable stressesare 70 Mpa in tension, 40 Mpa in shear and 160 Mpa in crushing.
3. A bracket as shown in fig. is welded to column. Determine the size of weld, if the permissible
shear strength of the weld is 80 N/mm2

4. Calculate size of the weld required for an eccentrically loaded weld shown in fig. the allowable
stress in weld is75 N/mm2.
5. Find the diameter of the bolt of the arrangement shown in fig. Assume material of bolt having
Sy=380 N/mm2 and factor of safety = 2.

6. A bracket as shown in fig. is bolted to column. Determine the size of bolts, if the permissible
shear strength of the bolt is 100 N/mm2
