TỔNG QUAN
▪ Với dạng bài Multiple Choice, thí sinh được yêu cầu nghe và chọn đáp án đúng trong 3/4 đáp án.
▪ Từ vựng được dùng trong các đáp án có thể không giống ‘y hệt’ trong scripts.
▪ Để làm tốt dạng bài này, ta cần nắm chắc kỹ năng note taking và paraphrasing.

NOTE TAKING
Ta take notes gì trong khi nghe?
- Ý chính
- Chủ thể được nhắc tới
- Động từ chính + thì của động từ
Lưu ý khi take notes:
- Không cần ghi rõ từng từ.
- Không cần viết đẹp, chỉ cần dễ hiểu với bản thân.
- Viết tắt càng nhiều càng tốt (nhưng mình phải hiểu)
- Không phải thông tin nào ta cũng note, mà chỉ note thông tin liên quan tới nội dung câu hỏi.

Ví dụ

Từ bản note trên, ta có thông tin: The school was set up in 1995. Originally, it was a hotel.

Từ bản note trên, ta có thông tin: Children under 10 will get a 20% discount for tickets.

Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing là cách diễn đạt khác so với cách diễn đạt ban đầu mà nghĩa không đổi.
Ví dụ:
Those who smoke frequently are likely to develop lung cancer.
→ Câu được ‘paraphrased’: Smoking can have a negative effect on health.

- Thông thường trong bài nghe, các đáp án thường có cách diễn đạt khác so với thông tin trong scripts.
Do vậy, phương pháp bắt ‘key words’ không phải lúc nào cũng có thể áp dụng thành công.
- Ta cần rèn kỹ năng đọc câu hỏi trước và hiểu ý của bài, thay vì chỉ chú ý tới ‘key words’.

Một số ví dụ về paraphrasing trong bài nghe.

Câu gốc: To improve the physical environment of employees’ office, we use different colored panels.
Đáp án trong bài nghe: …….. have used attractive materials.

Câu gốc: It’s advisable to wear warm clothes when you decide to go to the Artscape Exhibition because
it’s very cold there.
Đáp án trong bài nghe: People going to the Artscape Exhibition should wear appropriate clothing.

Câu gốc: Just bear in mind that the roads around the college can get pretty congested at that time on a
Friday, so allow plenty of time to get there.
Đáp án trong bài nghe: ……. transport will be a problem.

Read the scripts

Host: Good morning. Welcome to our weekly programme Urban Lifestyle. In today's programme, we'll
be talking about the disadvantages of living in a smart city. Joining me now in the studio is Ms Stevens -
a city dweller who has been living in a smart city for a year now.
Host: Good morning, Ms Stevens.
Ms Stevens: Good morning.
Host: I understand that you don't like living in the smart city. Why is that? What are you worried about
most?
Ms Stevens: Well, my main worry is losing my right to privacy in public places. You know, cameras and
sensors are everywhere, and they collect information about me and my activities.
Host: So it seems that someone is watching you all the time, right?
Ms Stevens: Exactly. The government and some companies have so much personal information about city
dwellers, but we don't know how they might use it.
Host: Yes, it's a bit worrying, but this information probably enables smart cities to create useful
programmes and improve people's lives. Smart technologies can also help with daily household chores.
Are you not happy with that?
Ms Stevens: No, I don't think so. It took me a long time to get familiar with all the smart devices at home.
I don't really have any friends to ask for help in the neighbourhood.
Host: This leads me to my next question. Do you think there is a sense of community in your
neighbourhood?
Ms Stevens: No, there isn't. I interact with very few people face to face because most of the activities can
be done online.
Host: Do you feel lonely sometimes?
Ms Stevens: Yes, our smart devices are all connected, but it seems we're becoming lonelier than any
previous generation.
Host: That's very sad. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Ms Stevens.
Ms Stevens: You're welcome.
