PHY210: TUTORIAL 5_WEEK 9

1. A healthy person has an oral temperature of 98.6 °F. What would this reading be on
the Celsius scale? (Ans: 37
°C)

2. A time and temperature sign on bank that the outdoor temperature is -20 °C. Find
corresponding temperature on the Fahrenheit scale? (Ans: -4 °F)

3. Cold water at temperature of 15 °C enters the heater and the resulting hot water has
a temperature of 61 °C. A person uses 120 kg of hot water in taking a shower. Find
the energy needed to heat the water. Given Cwater = 4186 J/kg °C.
(Ans: 2.3 x 107 J)

4. If 200 cm3 of tea at 95 °C is poured into a 150 g glass cup initially at 25°C, what will
be the common final temperature, T of the tea and cup when equilibrium is reached.
Assuming no heat flows to the surroundings?
(ρ = 1.0 x 103 kg/m3, Ccup = 840 J/kg °C for glass, Ctea= 4186 J/kg °C for water).
(Ans: 86°C)

5. A 200 g cooper calorimeter contains 150 g of water at 20 °C. The water is added 250
g of aluminum at 100 ° C. Find the temperature of the system after equilibrium is
established.
(Given CCu = 390 J/kg°C, CW= 4186 J/kg°C, CAl= 900 J/kg°C)
(Ans: 39.3 °C)
