5 Detailed description

5.1 Introduction
The factory new / back from repair center System Module shall be updated to required
SW level either locally using BTS UI (BTS Site Manager or Rescue Console) or remotely
using Plug and Play procedure. Remote upgrade is possible also in manual manner
through BTS UI after first steps of PnP to become remotely reachable. After final
customer SW installation, the System Module can detect the connected hardware.
Otherwise, no RF modules or optional subunits are detected if connected to System
Module with FDSW only.

Starting FDSW17SP, the Rescue Console can be used for SW download to desired target
BTS SW. Additionally, BTS Site Manager (for RAT SW or FDSW) is available in NOLS for SW
download. In FDSW18SP Rescue Console is the only UI (no BTS Site Manager support).

The AirScale system modules ASIA/ASIAA/ASIAB/ASIB/ASIBA/ASIK/ASIKA are

additionally equipped with 3rd partition where unit can be switched to boot up by
pressing service button. The 3rd partition is diagnostic and recovery partition (D&RSW)
that implements failsafe boot concept. The same FDSW version is preloaded to failsafe
partition in factories as on other partitions.

Once the system module is updated from FDSW to any of the BTS SW (WCDMA/LTE/TD-
LTE/GSM/SRAN), it is possible to make further normal SW upgrades according to RAT
SW specific Release Upgrade Instructions.

A sticker indicating ‘FDSW inside’ is attached to the delivery box, with FSMF for
example.

Base Stations –> FDSW Site Manager. Support Portal has the newest FDSW BTS Site
Manager available. This version is backward compatible with all the older FDSW
versions.
2. AirScale system modules deliveries prior to FDSW2.0 P8 (LN_WN_FDSW20_013)
have restrictions in functionality when booted up from failsafe partition running
D&RSW.
3. FDSW17SP introduces Graphical User Interface (GUI), called Rescue Console (RC) to
show alarms and status of BTS SW and allow the user to perform operations needed
to make target SW work properly. Rescue Console is accessible via web browser, no
additional SW installation on the terminal is needed. Rescue Console has the same
functions as BTSSM FDSW plugin and can be used to perform initial installation of
the RAT SW.

ASIA deliveries in 2016 were started with SW versions prior to FDSW2.0 P8.

ASIA unit manufactured before week 33/2016 (Serial numbers upto L11633) do not
have failsafe partition mounted. ASIA cannot start from failsafe partition

With ASIA units having pre-FDSW2.0 installed at the factory, SW update may not
complete when unit is started from failsafe partition. On such cases Restore tool shall
be used to update failsafe partition with latest FDSW version. This applies to D&RSW
versions

• LN_WN_FDSW20_R4_TRUNK_385, used from week 33/2016 onwards (Serial

number starts L11633)
• LN_WN_FDSW20_R4_TRUNK_478, serial numbers starting L11645 or K91650
• LN_WN_FDSW20_R4_TRUNK_490, used from Feb 2017 onwards (Serial number
starts L11709)

FDSW2.0 (LN_WN_FDSW20_013) failsafe is equipped with approved D&RSW. This has

been taken use on factories

• Factory "L1" from week 17/2017 onwards, serial number starts L11717
• Factory "AH" from May 2017 onwards, serial number starts AH1722
• Factory "K9" from August 2017 onwards, serial number starts K91735

g Note: Actual Customer deliveries can vary depending on the existing stocks at the
NOKIA delivery hubs.

FDSW does not detect any optional subunits/RF modules/antenna line devices. SW
upgrade to RAT specific BTS SW is mandatory step. In BTS Site Manager, no HW modules
are displayed in BTS Hardware view.

Figure 3 TS Hardware view

After first SW update to RAT SW, RF modules/optional sub-units/antenna line devices

connected are displayed. In addition, SW update for RF modules is required. Similarly,
manual commissioning steps can be performed.

5.3 Introduction of Rescue Console

Rescue Console is available from FDSW17SP onwards. Rescue Console is supported by
web browsers which support the following standards:

• HTML 5
• ECMAScript2015 6th edition
• CSS3

In case of web browsers not supporting such standards, full functionality of Rescue
Console might not be provided.

To establish a connection to the BTS site locally, connect the PC to the LMP port on the
System Module (FSM) using a twisted pair Ethernet cable with an RJ-45 connector.
Rescue Console is available only when running FDSW (activated manually or
automatically). In a remote connection, the connection is established via DCN network.
Rescue Console is accessible under the following web address:
https://192.168.255.129/RescueConsole

5.5 When to use the service button
Service button can be used to restart unit from 3rd partition that is diagnostic and
recovery partition (D&RSW) that implements failsafe boot concept. Service button is
labeled as ‘SERVICE’ located in ASIA/ASIAA/ASIAB/ASIK/ASIKA front panel. A plastic tool
is recommended to reach the button.

Figure 14 ASIA front panel view. Button locations are the same in other system
module variants

5.5.1 To enable SW upgrade to RAT SW and to put it in non-

commissioned state

Service button can be used in case of issues that do not cause complete failure of a
module. For example, when SW on active/passive partition is working but there are
issues with SW upgrade execution – then boot up from failsafe partition shall be
attempted.

Pressing service button alone does not remove configuration files from normal
partitions. To start over in non-commissioned state, the system module shall be first
updated to RAT SW (refer to chapter 6.3) and configuration files are removed at the
same.

Pressing service button does not change Local account / service account in normal
partitions.

Restriction

Certain ASIA modules are equipped in failsafe partition with pre-P8 FDSW2.0 as D&RSW.
These SW versions cause undefined system behavior e.g. the consecutive SW update to
RAT SW may not work.

5.5.2 To verify if system module is completely faulty

In case power cycle is performed and system module does not respond correctly, that is
BTS Site manager connection cannot be established, BTS commissioning cannot be
completed or SW update does not work, system module can be booted up from failsafe
partition.

Check through BTS Site manager whether AirScale system module (FSM) has booted
successfully.

FSM boot up is successful

• No need for unit replacement

• Unit must be reseted to be upgraded to the RAT SW release (as system module has
booted from failsafe partition)

FSM boot up fails

• Consider HW as faulty and move to next step - system module replacement.

5.6 Restrictions / Known issues

5.6.1 Synchronization at Sync In/Sync Out ports is not available with

FDSW.

System module running FDSW cannot generate or forward synchronization.

Workaround

Update the system module to RAT SW.

5.6.2 SW update to RAT SW using LN4.0 1.2 equipped FSMF

FSMF with LN4.0 1.2 (LN4.0_ENB_1202_781_57) cannot be updated directly to

FL15A/TL15A P8 SW and later due to restriction in feature LTE790 Signed SW.

Restriction

In case factory build LN4.0 1.2 is used, LTE790 restriction is valid.

• Direct SW Update from LN4.0 1.2 to FL15A P8 SW and later is not possible.
• Direct SW Update from LN4.0 1.2 to FL15A P8 SW and later is not possible.

and later onwards

For example: LN4.0 1.2 → RL55 MP1 → TL15A

Workaround B

Use RFS tool to perform direct SW update to FDSW. Refer to Technical Support Note TS-
SRAN-HW-0080.

5.6.3 SW updates using FDSW1.0 equipped FSMF

FSMF with FDSW1.0 cannot be updated to FL15A/FL16/FL16A/TL15A/TL16/TL16A/

SBTS16.2/SBTS16.10 SW directly due to following restrictions in features:

• LTE790 Signed SW
• SR000913 SBTS Signed SW

The update will permanently damage FSMF.

Restriction

In case factory build FDSW1.0 is used:

LTE790 restriction is valid

• Direct SW update from FDSW1.0 to FL15A/FL16/FL16A SW is not possible

• Direct SW update from FDSW1.0 to TL15A/TL16/TL16A SW is not possible

SR000913 restriction is valid

• Direct SW update from FDSW1.0 to SBTS16.2/SBTS16.10 is not possible

Workaround

To avoid permanent FSMF failure it is necessary to go through intermediate step

FDSW2.0. For example:

• FDSW1.0 → FDSW2.0 → FL15A

• FDSW1.0 → FDSW2.0 → SBTS16.2

For this purpose, the FDSW2.0 (LN_WN_FDSW20_013) was made available. Please
contact your local Nokia Support to get FDSW2.0.

g Note: RFS tool cannot connect to FSMF equipped with FDSW1.0.

Solution

FSMF equipped with FDSW1.1 or FDSW1.3, FDSW2.0 or FDSW17SP can be updated

directly to signed SW: FL15A/TL15A/SBTS16.2 and later.

5.6.4 BTS Site Manager cannot connect to FSMF equipped with FDSW

When WN6.0 BTS Site Manager is installed and no FD SW is installed, the incompatible
view is displayed and WN6.0 BTS Site Manager is launched in use.

Figure 15 Incompatible SW version

After selecting Update SW, connection procedure is stopped to Reading Data.

Figure 16 connection procedure is stopped to ‘Reading Data’

Workaround

1. Uninstall WN6.0 BTS Site Manager. This allows to use other installed BTS Site
Manager versions supporting FSMF.

2. Alternatively, install FDSW BTS Site Manager (WN6.0 and all other version can stay).

5.6.5 Failing SW update in scenario: targetSW_x -> FDSW -> tar-

getSW_x

Summary:

If FDSW1.3/FDSW1.4 was installed on top of targetSW_x then during the consecutive

SW update the targetSW_x should not be used again, see Figure 17: Example 1. Instead,
another targetSW_y must be used, see Figure 18: Example 2.

Figure 17 Example 1

This limitation is valid for all RAT’s.

Figure 18 Example 2

Workaround:

Use RFSTool (Restore Factory Settings tool):

targetSW_x -> RFSTool -> targetSW_x

or

targetSW_x -> FDSW -> RFSTool -> targetSW_x

Solution:

Issue fixed in FDSW2.0

5.6.6 Autoconnection and autoconfiguration fails with FDSW 1.x

Summary:

TS-SRAN-HW-0108: FDSW as a factory load for System Module - Page 35/41 © 2020 Nokia
Version: 14.0
Nokia Confidential
FDSW 1.x fails when SW download is requested from RFC2616-compliant HTTP 1.1
server. FDSW 1.x advertises HTTP protocol version 1.1 when establishing the
communication to the HTTP server. However the request format does not strictly follow
HTTP 1.1 standard, which results in rejection (HTTP error 400) on the standard-
compliant server side.

Request format is compliant with HTTP 1.0 standard, which is the reason why it may be
accepted by some (RFC2616 non-compliant) HTTP servers.

Customer Impact:

SW upgrade using HTTP server as a source cannot be done (all requests are rejected by
the server).

Workaround

Reconfigure HTTP server to treat all requests that are coming from FDSW 1.x as HTTP
1.0, even if HTTP header of the request states otherwise. Upgrade manually to target
SW or newer FDSW release.

Solution:

Fix available from FDSW2.0 onwards.

5.6.7 Incorrect IPv6 addresses handling from DHCP offer

Summary:

Wrong IPv6 BTS OAM peer IP address reading from DHCP offer option 17 during
autoconnection. FDSW is ignoring “zero” in the last octet of the IP address. If address is
given without zeros, it is handled correctly. If any other tag is defined (CMP
configuration, VPN GW), problem does not occur.

Example:

In case of IPv6 address in DHCP offer: 2a00:8a00:a000:11b0:40a is given as BTSOM

peer IP address in vendor specific option 17 tag 1 and no other tags are defined, FDSW
reads this address as 2a00:8a00:a000:11b0:4a. 4a is picked instead of 40a.

Customer Impact:

Autoconnection cannot proceed (communication is tried with an incorrect address).

Solution:

Fix available from FDSW17SP onwards.

5.6.8 SW installation failure from D&RSW on ASIA with FDSW version

prior to FDSW2.0

Summary:

TS-SRAN-HW-0108: FDSW as a factory load for System Module - Page 36/41 © 2020 Nokia
Version: 14.0
Nokia Confidential
ASIA booted up from the failsafe partition, running FDSW version prior to FDSW2.0
(LN_WN_FDSW20_R4_TRUNK_385, LN_WN_FDSW20_R4_TRUNK_478 &
LN_WN_FDSW20_R4_TRUNK_490) may not be updated to any SW directly due to the
problem with D&RSW version in the failsafe partition. The SW update process is started,
but no file transfer is performed.

These ASIA modules require a workaround to update RAT SW successfully.

Workaround:

Power the cycle system module to make the unit boot up from the normal partition.

Solution:

The approved FDSW2.0 is equipped to the new ASIA modules in the factory. If any ASIA
unit is sent to Nokia HWS, the failsafe partition is checked and updated accordingly.

5.6.9 IPv6 interfaces configuration will not be taken from previous

autoconfiguration with DHCP

Summary:

Affects only installation scenarios using IPv6 network with DHCP On.

When running FDSW18A on ASIK/ASIKA, ASIB/ASIBA modules after successful IPv6

autoconnection: second attempt of autoconnection will not use IP interface
configuration parameters previously set and written to NCF.xml file. As a result,
autoconnection is restarted from scratch and interface parameters are taken from
DHCP server.

When DHCP server is not reachable then autoconnection will not happen and module
will not be reachable remotely.

Such a scenario may affect a fallback to FDSW18A from running RAT software or any
module reboot with running FDSW18A software

Workaround:

When remote connection to the module is lost then start DHCP server.

If start of DCHP doesn’t solve the issue then connect to the module using LMP, start
Rescue Console and enter autoconnection parameters manually.

Solution:

Problem solution is expected in the next FDSW software release

5.6.10 Mozilla Firefox browser version 67 and 68

Update of BTS SW using Rescue Console with Mozilla Firefox browser version 67 and 68
may fail for FDSW17x and FDSW18x releases. On such cases it is recommended to use
other browser (for example Internet Explorer).

5.6.11 FDSW19: TLS connection in PnP procedure with ASIB/ASIBA,

ASIK/ASIKA, ASOD/ASODA

TLS connection in PnP procedure is not supported by the following FDSW product
versions with the corresponding HW variants

• FDSW18SP.1/SP.2/SP.3/SP.4/SP.5 on ASIK/ASIKA
• FDSW18A on ASIB/ASIBA and ASIK/ASIKA
• FDSW18A1 on ASOD/ASODA

Workaround:

Manual update via Rescue Console to FDSW19 or newer available FDSW version.

5.6.12 FDSW19: Special characters in passwords

Special characters in passwords caused SW download from NetAct to FDSW to fail

(PR488643).

Workaround:

Password modification on NetAct.
