“To be ignorant of the past is to remain a child”

Mihai Modi

What does it mean? It’s a quote of the words of the roman orator Cicero, but what do these
words mean for us?

We are children now, but we dream to become tomorrow’s adults, the ones who will continue
what our parents started. Can we do this without knowing the past?

To evolve, to realize great things, it’s obligatory to know what our ancestors did. Our past is
our history.

We love childhood with all its joys, with the Christmas gifts, with the permanently care of the
parents who sustain us unconditionally, with the friends who we have fun with.

But is this enough? Can we grow up completely and become real people if we don’t know
what happened in the world we live until the moment we were born?

Definitely, no!

The whole existence of us, Romanians doesn’t start with the geto-dacians, but more back in
time, in the Neolithic Age, the sharpened Stone Age and continues until our days and much
time from now ahead. Romanian people are one of the oldest people in the world and the
most beautiful example of continuity. Continuity makes us almost unique in the world’s
history.

Over our historic lands passed lots of wars, many people tried to destroy us as people but all
the hard things strengthened us and helped us to become an honest, diligent and tolerant
people.

We learn from here that our past does not mean just a mentioning of data and facts that our
history teacher advises us to learn for getting a good grade. It doesn’t mean not even
documentaries which we watch on TV, and, which I get bored at faster than my mother does.

I imagine history with all its aspects such as a torch that enlightens our present and shows us
the way to the future helping us to observe and to overcome the obstacles that appear in our
way. With knowing the past, the present and the future events have no value.

All these being said I’m proud of the place I was born and I’m conscious of the duty I got of
placing correctly the pieces of puzzle that complete my existence as a citizen of this country.
