Food Lover's Market which was launched 25 years ago has evolved from a pure fresh fruit and
vegetable store known as Fruit and Veg City into several brands, the latest of which serves meals.
The first Johannesburg-based Food Lover's Eatery opened in Sandton last month (August 2018) at
the Marc on Rivonia Road, a new shopping centre. There are 3 other Food Lover's Eateries in the
Cape Town CBD selling 10 000 to 15 000 meals a day between them.
With its design 2 years in the making, the Rivonia store feels like a sophisticated food deli or food
hall in a major capital along the lines of Eataly, the popular open-plan food hall concept in the US.
Mike Coppin, co-founded the Food Lover's Market group with his brother Brian said the quality and
variety were unrivalled. He expects it will become a regular lunch destination for local businesses.
"It has a strong focus on convenience in both the store design and service and is dedicated to
offering a fast lunch service. We find it's working really well," said Coppin.
"With world-class chefs and the highly trained team the Food Lover's eatery has already proved to
be the fastest gourmet lunch offering in Sandton." The eateries offer mostly quick restaurant type
food such as pizza, sushi and hot meals in locations with many office workers.
"These professionals want restaurant quality food quickly and don't want to wait ages for a waiter"
said Coppin. The store sits alongside a Seattle Coffee Co, a brand which the group has a 51%
stake. Coppin said Seattle, which has 190 outlets wants to bring more of a food component into its
offerings - items such as baguettes, croissants and sandwiches. At the moment coffee still accounts
for 95% of Seattle's sales.
The group's mother brand, Food Lover's Market has undergone a transformation in recent years
while 80% of its offering is still fresh, Food Lover's Market also sells grocery products, detergents
and other household goods giving it the feel of a supermarket but with a focus on fresh food. The
group also owns the FreshStop brand with outlets at Caltex service stations. There are 285 of these
outlets with another 30 planned over the next 12 months.
They also have 46 market liquor outlets. The company with sales turnover in excess of R12 billion
a year, 17 000 employees and 550 stores across all of its brands in South Africa, is becoming a force,
giving the likes of listed groups such as Shoprite and Checkers and Woolworths competition. Food
Lover's Market is one of the last few independent food retailers of scale in Africa. It’s growing its
footprint across the continent with more than 124 Food Lover’s Market stores and a presence in
11 countries. Coppin said that the group was building 11 new Food Lover's Market stores before
the end of the year. This weekend, one opened in Sediba Plaza and Hartbeespoort.
The group also owns FVC International which is one of the largest exporters and importers of fresh
produce in South Africa. The group is privately-owned, although emerging market investor Actis
invested R760 million in 2015. Coppin said the market was tough at the moment with everyone
fighting for market share and consumers were also feeling the pinch.
"We are still the best in the fresh produce game. We are happy for our fresh produce prices to be
tested against any other retailer and we are confident that no other major retailer can match us on
fresh produce prices. This value driven approach also allows us to offer fantastic prices in our Food
Lover's Eatery stores."
The Broll South African Retail Snapshot for the second quarter of this year found that regional
shopping centres research shows support for grocery supermarkets and food apparel. On the other
hand, beauty salons and spas, bookstores and fine jewellery stores are under pressure with lingerie
and swimwear suffering the worst year on year. The report stated the provision of
"shoppertainment" activities and the ability to offer something unique are more vital than ever.

In The production section, RE has over ten diverse employees. These employees’ tasks and
responsibilities are fairly shared and equal. Each person must make at least 10 pair of shoes per
day. Of late, one of the employees, Judith mistakenly forgot a print out of her payslip at the office
printer. Unfortunately, this was picked up by Mbali who then realised that there was unequal pay
although they were both doing the same job. This discovery greatly demotivated Mbali as she felt
that her efforts and performance did not match her rewards. This is more so because, during her
performance reviews, she had been told she was an outstanding performer who had good potential
to lead the team one day. In addition to having been with the company longer than Judith, Mbali
failed to understand the basis on which Judith was paid a much higher salary than her, this caused
tension between the two colleagues and essentially, Mbali started skipping work and missing daily
targets.
Upon realising that Mbali was demotivated, Rutendo decided to probe Mbali to find out what was
going on.
Unfortunately, Mbali could not bring herself to reveal the truth as she understood that salary
information is confidential. Instead, Mbali stated that she is feeling demotivated for the following
reasons:
• She feels she has not grown within the company over the last 10 years, been in the same
position
• She has not attended enough skills and development training to equip her for senior
management post that she has been promised.
• The company has not shown any appreciated for her loyalty and long service
• She feels overlooked and underpaid
Rutendo is seeking advice on employee motivation as she realises that many of her employees
have shown signs of demotivation.

Edcon Holdings’ latest recovery plan includes closing chains like Red Square cosmetics and La
Senza lingerie and attempting to lure their customers to its flagship Edgars clothing stores. The
move is the brainchild of new CEO Grant Pattison. He is a former CEO of Massmart Holdings,
including Game and Makro, and is best known for selling a majority stake in Massmart to Wal-
Mart Stores in 2011. The Johannesburg-based company has long struggled to stay afloat amid
weak consumer spending and economic growth and had to be taken over by banks and
bondholders in 2016 to avoid collapse. Under Pattison’s strategy, Edcon will reduce its 1,300-store
footprint and cut floor space by 17% over five years to boost profitability, the CEO said
Wednesday.
The retailer will focus its attention primarily on Edgars, which already sells most of the ranges
available in the stores that will close. Edcon will also retain discount clothing specialist Jet and its
CNA chain of stationery stores; though Boardmans Homeware is set for the chop (This process is
now almost complete).
The urgency comes as Edcon’s retail sales fell 9.4% in the three months through 23 December and
adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation slumped 25%. The
company’s owners include Franklin Templeton, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. LLC and Harvard
University Pension Fund, which took over Edcon when it was suffocating under foreign-currency
debt used to finance its 2007 takeover by Boston-based Bain Capital Private Equity LP. Net debt at
the end of 2017 was R4.2 billion ($306 million), compared with R24.7 billion the previous year.
Earlier attempts at reviving Edcon included increasing the workforce, slashing prices and
introducing international brands. The latter policy was reversed by Brookes, who led the
company for a little over two years.
Edcon said in March it was in discussions with creditors about refinancing debt to strengthen the
balance sheet. The company has a liquidity facility and credit facilities maturing at the end of
September.
