ARTWORK WHAT IS IT FOR

Girl with a Pearl Earring is an oil painting by

17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. It
is a tronie of a girl with a headscarf and a pearl
earring.

Earring, 1665
It depicts the view from the east-facing window of
his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just
before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized
village.

Combining allegory with contemporary elements,
the painting is a thrilling example of the Romantic
style, going for the gut with its titular character
brandishing the French Tricolor as members of
different classes unite behind her to storm a
barricade strewn with the bodies of fallen
comrades. Liberty Leading the People has become
synonymous with the revolutionary spirit all over
the world.

the People
The painting represents the scene of The Last
Supper of Jesus with his disciples, as it is told in
the Gospel of John, 13:21. It is one of the world's
most famous paintings, and one of the most
studied, scrutinized, and satirized.

The titles refer to the nautical tradition that waves
grow larger and larger in a series up to the largest
wave, the ninth wave, at which point the series
starts again. It depicts a sea after a night storm and
people facing death attempting to save themselves
by clinging to debris from a wrecked ship.

This famous art in the Philippines depicts key
figures in Philippine history, including those
part of the 19th-century Philippine movement,
in what is said to be a composition reminiscent
of Marvel’s “X-Men” cover.

Sabel in blue is a major subject that recurs
through BenCab’s works through the decades,
inspired by a real-life scavenger, he photographed
and sketched in 1965, the Sabel image has
become the artists vehicle for the transmission of
intensely emotional moods. When pushed to the
limits of abstraction, the Sabel image serves as a
fertile ground for the investigation of shape and
structure.

Sabel
The oil painting, which was created a little over
twenty-five years after Raden Saleh’s The Arrest
of Prince Diponegoro, in 1884, depicts two fallen
gladiators being dragged into the Spoliarium, a
holding area in the Roman Colosseum where
corpses of fallen gladiators were brought, to be
stripped of their armour and weapons before their
corpses were disposed of.

Spoliarium
It reflects the arrival of the Americans in the
Philippines and the idealism of the artist to the
Philippine society. The painting reflected the
people’s desire to escape from a complicated
reality into simplicity (Stancheva,2017).

Planting Rice
Seemingly fantastical, Rodel Tapaya’s Dry
Spell, looks to be a network of folktale,
meshed within the conundrums of modern
times. It is a monster, waiting to devour its
viewers with longing to stare at the painting,
analyzing every animal painted with acrylic.
Like a film riddled with symbolism of many
kinds, Tapaya’s paintings urge its viewers to
think critically.
