1 Access Bing Maps through firewall

1.1 Advice from Bing Maps Enterprise Support

Issue Definition: Customer is experiencing issues connecting with Bing Maps service, in particular not being able
to download the Bing Maps tiles through a corporate firewall.

Scope Agreement: As per your communication, you said you are experiencing issues connecting with Bing Maps
service, in particular not being able to download the Bing Maps tiles through a corporate firewall. The reason
behind the behavior you observed is that some servers, like the ones responsible for the tiles, use dynamic IP
addresses.

As a recommendation, it is important to configure a DNS-based firewall/proxy to get access to the domain

*.virtualearth.net. Additionally, for services using Bing Maps tiles hosted by Akamai servers and other
services like Spatial Data (SDS), you need to add to your firewall/proxy the following domain names that use
dynamic IP addresses:

 ak.dynamic.tx.tiles.virtualearth.net where x=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7

 tx.ssl.ak.dynamic.tiles.virtualearth.net where x=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7

 spatial.virtualearth.net

1.2 Advice for firewalls without FQDN capabilities

Issue Definition: Using a firewall that is not able to define FQDN capabilities in the network.

It implies that cannot be created a firewall rule based on DNS, but instead, it has to be created the rules based on
IP addresses.

Workaround: Install and configure an internal proxy server. Define the firewall to allow that the new proxy server
can access internet.

On the CM thick client configure the proxy connection in the default internet browser (e.g. internet explorer).

After the advanced LAN settings in the browser ConnectMaster use that information to connect also to the proxy
server.
