Subject : MATH (Compare and Round Class : IV - ..…………..………………….

Numbers)
Name : ………………………………………. Day/Date : …………………………………….

A. Comparing Numbers
1. Which numbers is greater 93.085 or 76.105?
Ten
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Thousands
9 3 0 8 5
7 6 1 0 5

Compare the ten thousand between the two numbers.

9 ten thousands is greater than 7 ten thousands.
So, 93.085 is greate than 76.105
2. Which number is smaller 36.520 or 37.859?

Ten
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Thousands
3 6 5 2 0
3 7 8 5 9

First, compare the ten thousand between the two numbers.

They are the same.
Then, compare the thousands between the two numbers.
6 thousands is smallers than 7 thousands.
So, 36.520 is smaller than 37.859.
3. Arrange the numbers 62.357, 9.638 and 28.986 in order.
Begin with the greatest.

Ten
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Thousands
6 2 3 5 7
9 6 3 8
2 8 9 8 6
Compare the ten thousand among the numbers.
6 ten thousands is greater than 0 ten thousands and 2 ten thousands.
So, the numbers arranged in order beginning with the greatest are:
Greatest → 62.357, 28.986, 9.638.

B. Rounding Numbers
To round a number to the nearest thousand
1. Look at the digit in the thousands place and the digit in the hundreds place
2. If the digit in the hundreds place is greater than or equal to 5, then round up
• Add one to the digit in the thousands place
• Change the digit in the hundreds, tens and ones place to zero
3. If the digit in the hundreds place is less than 5, then round down.
• Leave the digit in the thousands place as it is
• Change the digit in the hundreds, tens and ones place to zero

Round the number to the nearest thousand use place value

• If the hundreds place is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), so round down the number.
Example :
a. 2.368 ≈ 2.000 → Because 3 is less than 5, so rounded down.
b. 4.000 ≈ 4.000 → Because 0 is less than 5, so rounded down.
c. 14.176 ≈ 14.000 → Because 1 is less than 5, so rounded down.
• If the hundreds place is more than or equals to 5 (5, 6, 7, 8, 9), so round up the
number.
Example :
a. 2.500 ≈ 3.000 → Because 5 is equals to 5, so rounded up.
b. 7.900 ≈ 8.000 → Because 9 is more than 5, so rounded up.
c. 14.800 ≈ 15.000 → Because 8 is more than 5, so rounded up.

1. Ribbon A is 4.200 cm long.

4.200

4.000 4.500 5.000

It is nearer to 4.000 than to 5.000.

4.200 is 4.000 when rounded off to the nearest thousand.
We say 4.200 is approximately equal to 4.000.
We write 4.200 ≈ 4.000.
So, ribbon A is 4.000 cm long when rounded off to the nearest thousand centimeters.

We use the approximation sign ≈ to stand for approximately

equal to. It shows rounding off of the numbers.

2. Ribbon B is 6.700 cm long.
6.800

6.000 6.500 7.000

6.800 is between 6.000 and 7.000

It is nearer to 7.000 than to 6.000.
6.800 is 7.000 when rounded off to the nearest thousand.
6.800 ≈ 7.000.
Ribbon B is 7.000 cm long when rounded off to the nearest thousand centimeters.

3. Ribbon C is 4.500 cm long.

4.200

4.000 4.500 5.000

4.500 is exaclty halfway between 4.000 and 5.000.

4.500 is 5.000 when rounded off to the nearest thousand.
4.200 ≈ 5.000.
Ribbon C is 5.000 cm long when rounded off to the nearest thousand centimetres.
