1 Alkynes is a class of organic compounds with the general formula, CnH2n-2. Propyne, C3H4, is one
such example of an alkyne.

(a) Write a balanced equation for the complete combustion of propyne, C3H4. [1]

(b) A sample of propyne was burned in excess oxygen. When the remaining gases were passed
through aqueous sodium hydroxide, the gas volume was reduced by 0.450 dm3. Calculate the
mass of propyne in the sample.

Assume all gas volumes were measured at r.t.p. [2]

2 Group 2 carbonates undergo decomposition on heating to give the metallic oxide and carbon dioxide.

1.02 g of an unknown Group 2 carbonate, XCO3, was strongly heated until a white solid of constant
mass 0.505 g remained.

3 Zinc nitrate decomposes at 300°C whereas barium nitrate decomposes at 600°C to form zinc oxide
and barium oxide, respectively.

A 20.0 g sample containing a mixture of zinc nitrate and barium nitrate was heated at 350°C until no
further change occurred. During the decomposition, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen gas were evolved.
The remaining white solid weighed 11.3 g.

(a) Write an equation for the reaction that occurred when the sample is heated at 350°C. [1]

(b) Calculate the percentage composition by mass of zinc nitrate in the sample. [2]

4 Ascorbic acid (Mr = 176.0) is a food additive commonly added to candy to give a sour flavour. Iodine can
be used to determine the amount of ascorbic acid in food by oxidising the ascorbic acid to dehydroascorbic
acid.

OH OH
HO O HO O
O O + 2e-
+ 2H+

HO OH O O
Ascorbic acid Dehydroascorbic acid

A 100.0 g sample of a candy was dissolved in hot water. The resulting solution was filtered and diluted to
100 cm3 in a volumetric flask.

A 10.0 cm3 aliquot of the solution was pipetted into a conical flask and a few drops of starch solution was
added. The sample was then titrated with 0.005 mol dm-3 of iodine solution. The titre volume was 22.05
cm3.

Calculate the percentage by mass of ascorbic acid in the candy. [3]

5 Ferromanganese is an alloy added to steels to improve their mechanical properties. A 15.0 g sample of
ferromanganese was dissolved in 250 cm3 of dilute sulfuric acid to give a solution containing iron(II) sulfate
and manganese(II) sulfate. 25.0 cm3 of the resulting solution required 20.0 cm3 of 0.0360 mol dm-3 of
potassium manganate(VII) solution for complete reaction.

(a) By using the Data Booklet, construct a balanced equation for the reaction between resulting solution
and potassium manganate(VII) solution. [1]

(b) Calculate the percentage by mass of iron in ferromanganese. [2]

6 Iodine is used in a chemical test to confirm the identity of an unknown organic compound such as
propan-2-ol, through the formation of tri-iodomethane as a by-product.

CH2CH(OH)CH3 + 4I2 + 6OH- → CH3CO2- + CHI3 + 5I- + 5H2O

In the first step of the reaction, alkaline aqueous I2 oxidises propan-2-ol to propanone and itself is
reduced to iodide ions.
(Hint: Propanone has the molecular formula CH3COCH3)

(a) State the changes in oxidation number of the reactive carbon atom when propan-2-ol is
oxidised to propanone. [1]

(b) Hence or otherwise, construct a balanced equation for the reaction between iodine and
propan-2-ol. [1]

7 The presence of some amino acids has been linked to the precipitation of calcium ethanedioate
(CaC2O4), a component of kidney stones, in the body.

The ethanedioate ion is a reducing agent which produces carbon dioxide gas when reacted with
oxidising agents such as potassium manganate(VII).

Construct balanced ion-electron equations for the reaction between CaC2O4 and potassium
manganate(VII) in acidic medium.

Hence, write the overall equation for the reaction. [2]

8 Hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, is a strong oxidising agent which can oxidise aldehydes (RCHO) to
carboxylic acids (RCOOH), where R = carbon-containing group, for e.g –CH3.

(a) State the oxidation states of the carbon in C=O in both the aldehyde (RCHO) and the carboxylic
acid (RCO2H).

You may assume that R = Carbon-containing group. [1]

(b) Construct the oxidation half-equation for the conversion of RCHO to RCO2H in an acidic
medium. Hence, with reference to the Data Booklet, write the overall redox equation between
RCHO and acidified H2O2. [2]

9 When solid sodium chloride reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid, white fumes of hydrogen chloride
are observed as given in the equation:

NaCl (s) + H2SO4 (l) → HCl (g) + NaHSO4 (s)

However, when solid sodium iodide is used, very little white fumes are observed. Instead, dense
purple iodine vapour and a pungent gas are formed.

Solid sodium iodide is reacted with 0.00300 mol of concentrated sulfuric acid to give iodine as the
only iodine-containing product. The iodine produced is dissolved in 100 cm3 hexane.

25.0 cm3 of this solution required 12.0 cm3 of 0.500 mol dm-3 sodium thiosulfate for complete
reaction.

I2 + 2S2O32- → 2I- + S4O62-

Calculate the oxidation state of the sulfur-containing product in the reaction of sodium iodide with
concentrated sulfuric acid. [3]
