Themes
Over the course of the novel, four dominant themes emerge. These themes are often developed through
how the characters speak and act with one another. As you read, you will be asked to track the
development of the themes in each section by identifying quotes (Evidence) and explaining how those
quotes connect to the theme (Reasoning).

Guilt Characters expressing remorse over their actions or feelings

Friendship/Loyalty Characters speaking and acting in ways that reflect their loyalty and how they
feel about their friends

Father/Son Relationship Characters who are fathers and sons speaking and acting in ways that reflect
how they view their fathers or sons

Betrayal Characters speaking and acting in ways that betray those close to them

Redemption Amir, throughout the story, speaking and acting in ways that show he is trying to
make up for betraying people in his life

To complete the theme quote charts, it is important that you can identify the quote AND explain in your own
words how the quote reflects the theme and how it impacts the character and their relationships. Quotes do
not need to be spoken dialogue; they can be narrated from Amir to the reader. They may be out of order.
