When you are abroad, you must be careful how you express yourself with your body. If you make your
hand into a fist and begin to shake it at somebody, most people will understand that you're angry. But not
all actions mean the same in every country. In Asia, people are very careful not to touch anybody with
their foot. And, like many other countries, they never put their feet on chairs and tables where they are
sitting.

In Fiji, people shake hands for a very long time. Don't worry if this continues for all of your
conversation - it's normal. Greetings in some European countries are often quite physical. People kiss
friends and family on the cheek and they often hug. In countries like France, what you do at the dinner
table is very important. Don't put your elbow on the table, and don't eat with your fingers. People will
think you are rude if you do this.
Some countries have different ways of saying 'yes' and 'no'. In Greece and Bulgaria, people shake their
head for yes and nod for no. This can be confusing, so it's probably better to learn the words for yes and
no. However, there is one international expression that everybody understands. If you are having problems
and you don't know what to say, the best thing to do is smile.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 37 to 43.
A recent storm in the southwest of England brought an unexpected problem - large amounts of plastic
rubbish on the beaches. The oceans are full of plastic, and when a storm moves the water more than usual,
it can also lift this rubbish from the bottom of the sea and move it to the shore. It is clearly a big problem,
but some people are now taking action themselves.
In one town, a group of local people have decided to clean up their beach themselves. Although they
are all volunteers, so they aren't paid, they spend every weekend down on the shore, collecting as much
rubbish as they can. They put it into different bags, depending on the type. They sell anything valuable,
recycle as much as possible, and leave the rest to be taken away as rubbish. They also encourage tourists
who use the beach to pick up five pieces of rubbish before they leave.
One family is using art to make people think about the problem of plastic in the oceans. Sara and John
Bailey, together with their two children, regularly collect rubbish from the beach near their home and use
it to create works of art. Sara says they have great fun together choosing which things to use and thinking
of clever ways to use them. The works of art go into local shops, and the money they make from them
pays for any materials that they need.

A bigger project is using plastic from the oceans to create useful products for local people. The project,
which receives financial help from the government, collects plastic from the beach. It sends it to a local
factory, where it is recycled and made into kayaks, or small boats. These kayaks go back to local people
at no cost, and people can then use them to spend time on the sea collecting more plastic.
Although governments clearly need to take action to deal with the problem of plastic in the oceans, it
seems that individuals and local groups can also be a big part of the solution.

correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
As cities become bigger, those who can't move inland are starting to consider moving out, onto the sea
itself. Fishermen live at sea for long periods, but could large numbers of people really move onto the
water?
Koen Olthuis, the Dutch founder of Waterstudio.nl and a floating architecture expert, thinks so. His
company is involved in a project in the Maldives, a group of islands just 1.5 metres above sea level. By
2100, their beautiful beaches and white sand could be completely underwater. However, before the
architects can solve this problem, some cash has to be raised. To do this, Waterstudio will create a luxury
floating development, and use the money from this to develop artificial islands to provide houses for the
Maldives' poorer citizens.
As well as building on the water, architects are now starting to think about building under the water.
AT Design have produced plans for a 10 km2 floating city off the coast of Hong Kong, with islands above
the water connected by underwater tunnels and walkways. If and when it is completed, the city will have
gardens, a huge entertainment arena for sports matches and concerts and even its own farms, making it
self-sufficient. People will be able to travel back and forth from the mainland by ferry, and the designers
predict that it will be a huge tourist attraction. So, it seems that a life at sea will have a lot to offer!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
When I first retired, I thought I'd love spending more time on the gardening, needlework and other
creative activities I'd found so relaxing after my demanding job. But it didn't turn out that way. I wanted
to stimulate my mind instead.
So, with a couple of friends, I went along to an art appreciation evening class at our local regional
college. It was wonderful but only lasted a year. At the end, I asked my tutor, “What next?” He suggested
I attend his history of art access course. A full-time access course takes one year and gives you access to
university.
Lyn, who organises the courses for the college, was enthusiastic. “Why don't you do the whole course?
You could start in the spring term with art history, do another module in the summer, then go full-time in
the autumn and do all the subjects.” It sounded wonderful but wasn't I a bit old, at 63, to start being a
student? A 30 definite 'no'. One of the students that year was 82.
We have homework and have to do an essay each term for each subject, and sit exams. We also had to
produce a journal about all the painters we'd learnt about, which was fun but rather time-consuming.
Occasionally, I envy the more typical mature students, who just do courses for pleasure and don't have to
do exams or essays as I do but, really, I'm a very happy lady. Will I go on to university if I'm successful?
I'll see how next year goes. Meanwhile, exercising my brain cells is working well for me. I feel alive. The
garden's getting a bit out of control but that's the least of my worries!
