MECH- 401 Automobile Engineering

Unit-1: Brief Description of Automobile Engines
Brief history of automobiles, Main components of an automobile, brief description of each component,
FWD, RWD & 4WD, Type of automobiles. Use of automobiles in different sectors, e.g. Transportations,
industries, farming sectors, etc.Engine types, pistons and piston rings, valves and valve trains, cooling
systems and their components, antifreeze mixtures. Lubrication purpose and various systems of
lubrication, types and desirable properties of lubricants, components like oil filters, oil pumps, and oil
pressure indicators, air supply system, air filters, difference between turbo charger and super charger.

Unit-2: Power Train


Clutch function and its principal, different types of clutch, torque converters; manual and automatic
transmission/ transaxles; sliding constantly & synchromesh gearboxes, Epicyclic gearbox. Differential & its
principal, Propeller shafts and universal joint front and rear axles.

Unit-3: Brake Systems, Wheel & Tyres


Braking efficiency and stopping distances. Types of brakes, Drum and disc brakes. Detailed description of
hydraulic and pneumatic brake. Mechanical, vacuum and electrical methods of brake actuation, servo
brakes, ABS, type of wheels, tyres, type of tyres; cross ply, radial, tubeless etc. Specification of tyres.

Unit-4: Suspension System, Steering and Recent Trends in Automobile Engineering


Springs, shock absorbers, independent suspension, road springs. Factors of steering geometry, details,
correct steering angle, Ackerman steering mechanism. Cornering power, over steering and under steering.
Worm wheel and Rack pinion types of steering gears. Safety steering columns, power steering, Multi fuel
automobiles, Automobiles running on alternate sources of energy, Emission control through catalytic
converter, Double catalytic converter, Aspects of pollution control in Automobiles.

Management, Model Formulation, Types of mathematical models, Limitations of operations Research.
L.P. models, simplex method, The big M method, post optimality analysis, essence of duality theory,
Application of sensitivity analysis.

Unit-2: Transportation & Assignment model

Formulation and solution of Transportation model (least cost method, Voyel's Approximation method),
Least time transportation problem, Assignment problems.Introduction to net work logic, Numbering of
events, PERT calculations - Forward path, back-ward path. Slack, probability, comparison with PERT,
Critical path, Floats. Project cost, crashing the net work, updating

Unit-3: Simulation
Introduction, applications of simulation, advantages and limitations of simulation technique, generation of
random numbers, Time-flow mechanism, simulation languages. Steps in decision theory approach,
Decision Machinery environment, Decision machining under certainty and uncertainty, Decision
machining under condition of risk, Decision trees, Minimum enchained criteria, Advantages and
limitations of decision tree solutions, post optimality

Unit-4: Queuing Theory


Introduction, Applications of queuing Theory, Waiting time and idle time costs, single channel queuing
theory and multi channel queuing theory with Poisson. arrivals and exponential services, Numerical on
single channel and multi channel queuing theory. Theory of games, competitive games, Rules for game
theory- saddle point, dominance, mixed strategy (2 x2 games) , mixed strategy (2 x n games or m x 2
games), mixed strategy (3 x3 games), two person zero sum games, n-person zero sum games.

Assembly Directives, Macro’s, Simple Programs using Assembler, Implementation of FOR Loop, WHILE,
REPEAT and IF-THEN-ELSE Features, String Manipulation, Procedures.

UNIT-2: I/O INTERFACE AND INTERFACING WITH ADVANCED DEVICES


Parallel data transfer scream, Programmed I/O, Interrupt Driven I/O, 8255 PPI, Various modes of
operations and interface of I/O devices to 8086, A/D, D/A Converter Interfacing, Stepper Motor Interfacing.

8086 System bus structure, Memory and I/O Interfacing with 8086, Interfacing through various IC
Peripheral Chips, 8257 (DMA Controller), 8259 (Interrupt Priority Control), Memory Interface using RAMS,
EPROMS and EEPROMS.

UNIT-3: COMMUNICATION INTERFACE & : INTRODUCTION TO MICRO CONTROLLERS


Serial Communication Standards, USART Interfacing RS-232, IEEE-488, 20mA Current Loop, Prototyping
and Trouble shooting, Software Debugging tolls, MDS.

Overview of 8051 Micro Controller, Architecture, I/O ports and Memory Organization, Addressing modes
and Instruction set of 8051, Simple Programs using Stack Pointer, Assembly language programming.

UNIT-4: 8051 INTERRUPTS COMMUNICATION & INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS


Interrupts, Timer/Counter and Serial Communication, Programming Timer Interrupts, Programming
External H/W interrupts, Programming the serial communication interrupts, Interrupt Priority in the 8051,
Programming 8051 Timers, Counters and Programming.

Applications of Micro Controllers, Interfacing 8051 to LED’s, Push button, Relay’s and Latch Connections,
Keyboard Interfacing, Interfacing Seven Segment Display, ADC and DAC Interfacing.
