Literary Devices

Allusion- An allusion is a literary device used to reference another object outside of the
work of literature. The object can be a real or fictional person, event, quote, or other work
of artistic expression.

Simile- Dissimilar objects or concepts are expressly compared with one another
through the use of “like” or “as.” Simile is used as a literary device to assert
similarity with the help of like or as.

Metaphor- Comparisons without the express use of “like” or “as.”

Onomatopoeia- Onomatopoeia indicates a word that sounds like what it refers to or


describes. The letter sounds combined in the word mimic the natural sound of
the object or action, such as hiccup.
Alliteration- Alliteration is a literary device that reflects repetition in two or more
nearby words of initial consonant sounds.

Personification- Giving qualities of living beings to non living beings.

Symbolism- Poets use symbolism to convey hidden meanings.
