Exercise 1:
The table illustrates the percentage of students studying in four types of secondary schools,
namely Specialist Schools, Grammar Schools, Voluntary-controlled Schools and Community
Schools from 2000 to 2009.

Overall, the percentage of students attending in Specialist Schools was the lowest, while the
opposite was true for Voluntary-controlled schools. In addition, on the whole, the proportion of
students studying in four secondary school types decreased over the period.

First of all, the percentage of pupils in voluntary-controlled schools from 2000 to 2009, fell
dramatically from over half to only 20%. Similarly, the number of children in grammar schools
dropped by a quarter to half in the same period.

On the other hand, while the other types of schools declined in importance, the community
schools increased sharply. Whereas 12% of the educated were in community schools in 2000,
this figure had increased to half of all pupils during the following nine years.

Exercise 2:

The table illustrates rail transport in four different countries, namely the United Kingdom,
America, Japan, and Italy in 2007.

Overall, passenger kilometers per head of population registered the highest in four countries,
while the number of people who used rail transport (not including metro) had the lowest.
Moreover, Italy, which is the country that uses the largest of the three kinds of rail transport.

First of all, the number of people using rail transport in Japan was the most popular in the four
given countries, accounting for 27 million. Similarly, the figure for cargo carried in the US had
the highest, at 2,820 billion of tons. In addition, passengers per head of population in Japan were
about twice as many as in Italy, at 1,980 and 780, respectively.

Besides, Italy had the same number of railway systems as the UK. People who used rail transport
in Italy make up 5.5 million, followed by the UK at 5.9 million. Passenger per head and cargo
carried in both countries, were 775 kilometers and 22 billion tons.
